Continuing by popular demand … Well, at least the poll got way more votes, way faster, than I thought it would to start with. Just shows how desperate we all are to have something related to FCS football to fuss about, IMO. And, since some people seemed to want the chance sooner rather than later, I have included the MSU-UI game in the poll.
As usual, two choices and you can change your mind later.
I’ll go ahead and put my “commentary” here. Again, if someone out there knows more about some of the teams in the matchup … let’s hear it.
Abilene Christian was really bad last year, apparently due to a major run of injuries. They did pull off a bit of an upset late in the year. Air Force had a good year overall, but ended the season with a three-game losing streak, including getting blown out in their bowl game. But even with that, this does not look like much of an upset chance here. (But that’s why you play the game.)
Neither Montana State nor Idaho had, or has, much to be proud of. And it does not matter much what arguments you bring up … votes are going to depend upon which team people hate the most. Or, as was so eloquently put on the other thread … bobcats suck! and Idaho blows!
Presbyterian College is another bad FCS team, with only 2 wins last year. And many of those (not so great) players that started have now graduated. Central Michigan was at least mediocre at 7-6 after losing in their bowl game. But you never know.
South Carolina State was pretty good last year (7-4), for the MEAC, but did not make it into the playoffs as an at-large. They lost a number of key players to graduation, but have some proven replacements for at least some of them. UCF, on the other hand, was awful … losing every game. That included a close lost to Furman and some monster blow-outs for the rest. They’re almost bound to get better. But who knows how much?
South Dakota State, as we know, had a pretty good year. They claim to have had a great recruiting year (who doesn’t?) to fill out a solid core of players. But TCU was a powerhouse and is expected to be strong again. Does not look good for the wabbits.
SFA lost five straight to start the season so they were going to have a bad record no matter what. But they went 4-2 down the stretch. They return 17 starters and claimed to have added a half dozen “impact” transfers. Texas Tech won just enough games (6) to get into a bowl game, where they got obliterated by nearly 30 points. (Saw that game. LSU set a record for bowl-game points even though they played all reserves in the final quarter.)
Towson was another 7-4 team, with some very good wins, that had a chance to get into the FCS playoffs. They return a total of 17 starters, including the All-ACC stud running back. They will be tough again. USF had a very good year after a rocky start, but then lost in their bowl game against Western Kentucky. They have to replace most of their top offensive starters and apparently the backups did not get a lot of PT. The defense is solid but supposedly lacks experience at some key positions.
