When a school signs an athlete on scholarship it does so on a two pronged fork. On one prong the athlete promises to play whatever sport the were recruited for. On the other fork the school promises to provide the athlete an education with the goal being a degree. Once the athlete has fulfilled his promise to play and the school provided its obligation to educate, the contract is at an end. Both parties have received what they bargained for. Unless the scholarship contract states that the athlete must complete his/her allowable eligibility at that institution, which they do not, the concept of making an athlete stay at that institution because they still have eligibility left is tantamount to indentured servitude.
Further, it should be of no concern whatsoever to the school what an athlete does once they graduate. Other than a purely self motivated selfishness on the part of the athletic department, boosters and fans, there is simply no justification for altering the rule.
