FCS STATS Poll Guesses (Oct 6)

With seven ranked teams losing on Saturday, we can expect a lot of movement. Of course, some lost to another ranked team so they shouldn’t get killed by the pollsters.

#1 NDSU (5-0) [1]
#2 JMU (5-1) [2]
#3 SDSU (4-1) [3]
#4 Weber State (3-2) [4]
#5 Villanova (6-0) [5]
#6 Montana State (5-1) [6]
#7 Montana (5-1) [8]
#8 Kennesaw State (4-1) [7]
#9 Towson (3-2) [9]
#10 UNI (3-2) [13]
#11 Furman (4-2) [14]
#12 NC A&T (4-1) [15]
#13 Nicholls (3-2) [16]
#14 Delaware (3-2) [19]
#15 Illinois State (3-2) [10]
#16 Maine (2-3) [20]
#17 Central Arkansas (3-2) [11]
#18 Jacksonville State (4-2) [21]
#19 SE Missouri State (3-2) [23]
#20 Princeton (3-0) [25]
#21 Youngstown State (4-1) [18]
#22 SE Louisiana (3-2) [17]
#23 UC Davis (2-4) [12]
#24 Dartmouth (3-0) NR
#25 SC State (3-1) NR

NR EWU (2-4) [22]
NR Stony Brook (4-2) [24]

First and foremost, with no one higher ranked than the Griz losing, I don’t see the pollsters giving them much"new" love.

However, at least some voters should be aware that two of Kennesaw State’s wins were against NAIA opponents. That takes a bit of the bloom off their close (“good”) loss to FBS Kent State. So I can see the Griz trading places with them. Might the fact that MSU had to go into overtime to win mean something? Maybe, but “everyone knows” road games are tough, while the Griz were at home.

Most of my other changes were pretty standard. They might cut Illinois State some slack, but I think not much … they were at home and still got stomped. I believe the pollsters will go somewhat easier on YSU because they were on the road and it was a close game.

The question mark, in my mind, is UC-Davis. I hammered them down eleven spots, which is a lot for such a close, last-minute loss. But they have now lost three in a row, including the butt-kicking they got from the Griz. I can easily see them dropping out of the top-25 altogether. (I didn’t do that because a lot of pollsters hate to admit they’ve been wrong … and they’ve been pretty high on Davis right from the pre-season poll.) If Davis does drop out, that would open a spot for Austin Peay or Sam Houston State.

Dumping EWU was an easy call because you just cannot afford to lose when you’re ranked in the twenties to start with. That’s why I see #24 Stony Brook nudged out, even though they took JMU into overtime. Still, it would not surprise me to be wrong about the Seawolves.

Dartmouth and South Carolina State were the top “Other” vote getters in last week’s poll, so I moved them into the two spots opened up. That puts two Ivies in the top-25, which some might debate … but that’s how the votes shape up.

Move UM to #6 and drop MSU to...who cares.
Griz to #6 could happen, but I'm doubtful. The kitties were over 460 votes ahead of the Griz in last week's poll, and that's a lot of ground to make up.

Griz will move to #5 maybe #4 spot.
A move to #5, while unlikely IMO ... not impossible. To #4 ... not gonna happen. NDSU, JMU, SDSU all won and are rock solid at the top. And even if the pollsters were to drop Weber (which they may), there's no way the Griz move past an undefeated Villanova team

It will be an interesting matchup next weekend between James Madison and Villanova. Whichever team loses on Saturday will help the Griz move up into the Top 5.

Brian McLughlin's poll ballot puts Montana at #4

Also, Montana moves from No. 7 to No. 4 based on its play the past few weeks. I also bumped UNI from No. 16 to No. 10 while also keeping in mind the Panthers obviously need to be behind Weber State, who they fell to. Lower in the poll, a large contingent moved up because they kept their resume's clean and several others dropped down (or out) of the poll ballot, and these clean-resume teams were rewarded.

Absolutely! But it could get even more interesting because of the other matchups on Saturday.

Here's the deal. With #2 JMU getting #5 Villanova at home, it's quite likely that JMU will "hold serve." That will likely drop 'Nova four or five spots ... to #9 or #10. But if 'Nova pulls the upset, then JMU drops four to six spots ... to #6 or #8. Either way, there's a gap above #6 or #7

#1 NDSU get Northern Iowa at home. Upset likely? Probably not, but not impossible
#3 SDSU goes on the road to Youngstown State. YSU did better at UNI than many of us expected. Thus, them knocking off SDSU on their home turf is also not out of the question.
#4 Weber is at home against pathetic SUU, so that's likely a win for them.
#6 MSU hosts Sac State. After what the Hornies did to EWU, you cannot bet a lot against them winning in Bozeman.

Obviously, none of this may break in favor of the Griz. But, barring something really weird, the Griz seem likely to move up at least to #6, and #5 is not out of reach. It's going to be a lot of fun (no stress) sitting at home watching how all this plays out.

Almost did that, but the pollsters aren't much into changing positions when the results are pretty much the same.

Agreed, it is a tough call. The 6 and 0 puts Villanova over the top to me though.
