What an amazing weekend! Eight ranked teams lost. That’s happened before, but six of those losses were among the top-10 in the rankings. I’m not sure that has ever happened before. And if it has, it’s certainly been awhile.
Poll Guess, Team (Record), [Current Rank]
1 Jacksonville St (8-1) [1]
2 NDSU (7-2) [6]
3 McNeese St (9-0) [9]
4 Coastal Carolina (8-1) [8]
5 SDSU (7-2) [11]
6 W&M (7-2) [12]
7 Illinois St (7-2) [2]
8 Chattanooga (7-2) [3]
9 EWU (6-3) [4]
10 Richmond (7-2) [5]
11 Harvard (8-0) [13]
12 SHSU (6-3) [7]
13 JMU (7-2) [14]
14 Charleston So (8-1) [15]
15 PSU (7-2) [10]
16 Fordham (8-2) [16]
17 UNI (5-4) [17]
18 NC A&T (8-1) [19]
19 SUU (7-2) [20]
20 YSU (5-4) [21]
21 Montana (5-4) [22]
22 Dartmouth (7-1) [24]
23 E Kentucky (5-4) [18]
24 Northern Arizona (6-3) [NR]
25 Citadel (7-2) [25]
NR Indiana St (4-5) [23]
The string of losses at #2 through #5 means that whole block will moved down about five spots. That, of course, does not help the Griz at all. Since EWU lost to a pretty good team and Chattanooga lost to a weak opponent, it would not surprise me if those two swapped positions in the new poll. Since Portland State only recently got just a little respect, it would also not surprise me if they dropped another spot or two with their loss.
With its loss, #23 Indiana State will surely drop out of the top-25, so I had to decide on a replacement. Trouble is, four of the seven top vote getters (led by MSU) lost their games this weekend. The other three top vote getters – Grambling State (7-2), Bethune-Cookman (8-2), and Central Arkansas (6-3) – all won, so any one of them could move in. And, further down the list, Tennessee-Martin (6-3) beat #18 Eastern Kentucky, so they could be in the mix too. But I decided that NAU’s win on the road at #4 EWU would get enough attention to bump them into the top-25 (shaky, but I’m sticking with it.
)
So, in the end, the loss by E. Kentucky is the only result that helps the Griz … to move up just one spot. Does UM “deserve” to be #21? I think that’s fair -- it puts them in with a whole block of teams that are 5-4.
