FCS becoming the next JUCO league?

It seems that the FCS level will/is becoming a new version of JUCO ball. Kids will sign here expecting to be here for 1 or 2 years. They try to make a name for themselves, so they have a chance to get "hired" by FBS teams.

You are right, in that more and more players seem to be willing/wanting to step up, as well as seek NIL money.

On the other hand, there are still only the same number of starting and two-deep slots at the top schools. That number hasn't increased. And only so many of those schools will have a lot of NIL money.

The Portal et al is making it easier for players to get to bigger/better schools, so that, presumably, the best players are playing at the top levels. But some of the players at those schools are thus not playing or starting. Are they staying or are they moving on, either sideways or down? I don't know. I suppose some of those players may just stay at their school, for their not-huge NIL.

I know the money impacts the players, I assume fairly significantly. It would never have affected me in college, and didn't affect me in law. I could have gone elsewhere for an extra half million or million per year in law, but I wanted to stay at my firm with my friends and people. The extra money wouldn't have been worth it.

Look at the Indiana qb, who looked like he was coming to UM, but decided to go to Michigan for some chunk of NIL money and being a total back-up. At least, Michigan is in the playoffs.

I wouldn't have made his decision. I would have come to UM to be the starter and try to get to Frisco. The $90,000 or whatever it was wouldn't have been worth it for me. 5 starts at Indiana; I thought he'd had more there. 4 carries. 14-17 for 130 yards throwing in 6 games. I TD this season; no picks. Not much.

I would rather have gone to the Griz for a big year and the playoffs, or stayed with my friends at Indiana.

I know times have changed. And more power to the guys who want to do what they want to do, and those who move on. If I were still working, I would look hard at those guys who transferred, to see if I thought they had the loyalty to work for my company.

My biggest beef is that there is so much tampering going on. Active recruitment of players on rosters who aren’t even in the portal should be seriously policed and punished when discovered. People are making mountains out of sign stealing right now, when this is the real elephant in the room.

The overall system and lack of rules, creates the problem. The tampering just follows naturally. Do you think players are reaching out to friends and others, before they are in the Portal? Of course, they are. Cat player texts a high school friend at big school. I am thinking of transferring. Do you think my school would be interested? What NIL might they pay me? I assume that's not even a violation.

I think as college football consolidates all levels of football will become feeders for the TOP 40 or whatever they end up calling whatever emerges from the smoke and dust. There is no more Power 5, the commissioner of the PAC took care of his conference and the Playoff selection committee just neutered the ACC. Eventually I see 4 ten team divisions, maybe some regionalism, maybe some traditional rivalries. Full professionalism and I would expect that the players will no longer be required to attend the school they play for.

The days of redshirting all freshman are over. If they can contribute you need to use them while they are still on the team especially when they are from out of state (more likely to not have the Griz love/loyalty that in state kids do)

I think we’re also seeing the craziest times for the portal now. There’s going to be many less players in the country 2 years from now when all these 6-7 year seniors are done.

Good point. We are getting to the end of the COVID era players

At this point, it a lot about nothing. Moving up will just lose our guys to the level above it. All we can do is field a good team and enjoy ourselves. Unless someone out there wants to fund our collective with hundreds of millions, this is the state of things. You don’t have to like it but you sure as hell better get used to it.
