Fall Camp Updates

I attended practice today. Being it's early in camp, it was a lot of position group drills, some 5 on 5, 7 on 7, 11 on 11. So it was difficult to get an accurate read. I primarily focused on qbs and wr, being rb and OL are deep and almost plug in play groups.

As for offense verses defense, the defense was damn consistent and overall won the day. Coverage was better than I expected, it took time for wrs, tes, and rbs to even get somewhat open. The OL gave qbs time as well. The defense wasn't dominating,, just didn't make mistakes and looked very disciplined.

The last drill of the day was their 4th quarter and redzone competition. Surprisingly enough, Vidlak and Brown each led td drives, with terrific decisions and nice execution. McDowell threw a terrible pass that was picked. It was a bad decision and just looked bad altogether.

Speaking of passing, qbs, etc. Ah Yat threw and absolutely perfect pass 25 yards under pressure scrambling to his left. I couldn't tell who caught it.

Earlier, the offense perfectly executed a double pass for a wide open long td. Again couldn't tell which WRs threw it and caught it. I didn't have a very clear view.

I was hoping to see 1 qb stand out. Instead, Vidlak and Brown each looked consistent without any major mistakes or bad passes. McDowell was good and bad. He has a way to go in executing an offense. He also was on special teams kick return some. His athleticism and size are impressive.

WRs struggled in getting open early. As expected White and Simpson made some nice catches multiple times. Surprisingly enough, Racanelli actually stood out to me. Those 3 were the WR standouts.

Of note Bergen and Ostmo appear to be limited in practice. Physically they're fine. I just think, there's no need to risk anything with them. Child's played some. For the most part, Gilman and Iverson saw a lot of snaps. Those 2 are impressive. They each have nice size, hands, skill and terrific balance for young rbs. We will be fine at rb.

Defensively, I was impressed with their consistency. They forced the offense to make the plays and didn't get beat with errors. Offensively, the qbs and wrs have to get in sync and recognize things earlier. Based on today, qb is a 2 man race. McDowell is too inconsistent this early. Brown and Vidlak took care of the ball. They didn't make mistakes. Their problems are getting the wrs on the same page. That'll happen with time.

There's a new player not on the roster. He's #92, very tall, agile, that has a build to put on weight. He's a FR DE that just got here. No idea who he is, physically he stood out for a FR.

Great to see the boys in action.
Of note, they appear to be a calmer bunch this year. I didn't hear or see a lot of over the top antics, except from Peace. That man is intense.

If it ends up being close between Vidlak and Brown I hope they give it to Vidlak since he’s been here less time with the offense and will have 3 years left compared to 2 like brown would have. I mean hell Browns already been here 5 years with the Covid year he should be miles ahead of everyone

people are going to go nuts but I think Brown is going to be taking most of the snaps and doing well.

Doing well in practice has never been his issue.

Based on this practice, the 2 were almost even. Slight edge to Vidlak. Here's why?

Under pressure, Vidlak threw the ball away. Meanwhile, Brown took a sack. It's easier to overcome a neutral play than a 5 to 7 yard loss. Some games will come down to those minor decisions. However, Both look comfortable doing their part in the offense. Vidlak seems to distribute touches to more guys. Brown relies on Simpson a little more. Regardless, both looked solid though.

The OL gave them good time for the most part. Most the completed passes were late in the play. The defense didn't give up quick passes much. The shorter passes were mostly to safety valve options. I did see a few drag route completions though.

Agreed. Some QBs have the "it" factor, and some just don't. It is possible KB has it and it will show at some point, the gamer mentality, but it's looking like you're going to find out one way or the other. I was thinking Vidlak would be your clear cut #1 but maybe not. Plus, highly likely you need two damn good QBs to survive a season and have a chance for a deep run to the title game.

I think your guy last year, Johnson, had it? I know damn well Sneed had it. I'll never forget his performance in 2019. Getting smashed and getting back up every time. Made some mistakes, but didn't matter because he'd get back up the next play and make an incredible throw. He brought you guys back to the point where would should have won that one but lost it simply due to Cat D getting the better of your OL and RB on that play. Had zero to do with Sneed.

I'd love to have another Sneed like performer and leader.

I would be happier than a pig in doo if Brown were to be the guy and take the team on his shoulders. Montana kid who has received a ton of criticism for his play. Maybe he has matured? Possibly the coaching change is just what he needed? Could the oline be better and afford him more time and confidence? Let’s not forget - first week of practice. Lots can change in the coming days, weeks and months. I hope he is rewarded for his dedication and patience. I also remain skeptical.
