Facility Improvements...

I was wondering what is on the drawing board in Missoula. It seems like every year or two the Griz were announcing a big facilities project, I haven't heard much lately; is anything going on in that regard?

I think improving our facilities is one of the thing that helped USU after standing still for 35 years, I sure hope UM (and MSU) never make that mistake. I really don't want to see other FCS teams catch up to you guys, and I hope they don't.

There's going to be a new student athlete academics/study center soon. New weight room is on the list.

Seems like I've been hearing about a weight room for about 8 years now.

It seems that UM is content on standing still for about 35 years like USU did. As long as Engstrom (FU BEEATCH!!!) is in office there will be little to no improvements in facilities, Griz football, or even academics.

And it's too late for other FCS teams catching up to UM, some are already passing by or are about to.

Actually, Engstrom is fully behind Athletic improvements. King George would not let any project go forward until money was raised for ALL improvements. Royce made the statement to the AD "when we have money for a project, we will build". Money was raised for the Academic Center, and construction will start in June. Most of the money has been raised for the weight facility, and architects were on campus a couple months ago.

The plan was to remodel the Art Annex into a new state of the art weight room / training facility. Then, since the current weight room is next to the locker room once they moved the weight room they were going to gut both old spaces (old locker and old weight room) and double the size of the locker room. Then they got the estimates for the Art Annex remodel and it ended up being way over budget. They are trying to find a spot to build a new building for the weight room. Last I heard they were looking at the parking lot behind the Art Annex.

The initial order of operations before the ROOT TV deal went

1. Academic Center
2. Weight Room
3. Locker Room
4. Lights

However the TV deal bumped the lights to the top, I'm not sure but I think they had to use funds intended for some of the other projects to get them done.

Haslam has also added in getting a wood floor in the East Aux gym as well. I'd also heard the EAG as a rumored spot for the weight room as well. The art annex is off the table for a spot, the cost to move that into a new place was much higher than anticipated.

When I last talked to KH, just before the architects were scheduled to arrive, the plan was as follows: Build the weight facility between the field house as the FB stadium. Move the rest rooms on the west side of the stadium further north and south respectively and build the new room between them. This would cover the existing west entrance which has continued to be a moisture problem even with the newest fabric covering. The room would also access the current weight room now currently below that west entrance. I assume entrance to the stadium on the west side would then be under cover. An added plus to this plan would be that no parking would be lost. I have not heard anything since, but I have to assume that this is still the plan unless the architects found it unfeasible.

I agree; I'm confused why RE is so disliked on here. I get the whole firing thing, but in 4 years he's done far more to move along internal building projects for athletics than GD did in 20 years. RE understands the importance of athletics on the UM campus, and understands that it's important to improve the internal facilities which improve the life of student athletes as opposed to just improving the facilities for fans.
