EWU's next Payton and NC winning QB?

If it weren't for a gift spot on the 22 on 4th down The Eagles would have been the runner up. If it weren't for a blown call on the NDSU running back the Eagles wouldn't have advanced beyond the quarter finals. I wouldn't crow too much about a championship game won with help from the officiating crews.
I was unaware that JBB lived in Texas now.

Are you serious with this? Who gives a shit about POY?? Yeah, it's a nice award, and the Griz have a few of those hanging in their closet as well. But are you REALLY trying to suggest that the eags have been level with the GRIZ over the past 8 years??? Does that POS red field field blind people that badly???

No, but Griz arrogance surely does. National Player of the Year awards (Buchanan, Payton) bring great recognition to a program. Especially ones that consistently produce them. And last I checked, you play the game for championships. Yes, the Griz have a ton more BSC championships over that period, but I'll take our 3 BSC titles and 1 NC in those 8 years any day over UM's 7 BSC titles and 0/3 NCs.

Sure you'll take it. Because it's the best you can offer, and because you have no idea how hard it is to sustain the level of excellence the GRIZ have over the last 20 years. And POYs bring recognition to a program?? Seriously dude, ask around the nation and see which program is better known. If you think you'd get more than 5% to answer ewoooo, I also presume you think you'll eventually date the tooth fairy.

Damn, these wet nose kids; you're hardly even out of being a "savage" yet. The rivalry between the Griz and Eastern Washington, once known as the "State Normal School," if one can believe that, begins and/or enhanced, for all intents and purposes, to the best of my recollection, about 13 October 1984 when the Griz were hosting the "Eags." The game between the 4-1 EWU, an I-AA Independent at the time (Div. II up to 1982), and the 2-3 Griz at the old Dornblazer Field amongst all the pubs. There may have been games between us before but they were for all intends and purposes rather on the friendly side of things, until...

O.K. So the game ends in a 14-14 tie, but, this is the rub, EWU had the ball on offense last and were trying to make a game of it, don't rightly know or recall if the QB was a Rick Worman that spent six years in the CFL afterwards or not, but the name does seem familiar (could have been Rob James for all I know); the last play of the game was a pass, perhaps to the TE, maybe, perhaps it was a Mark Gehring, can't quite remember, that has a one year roster tryout with the Houston Oilers in '87 later on. This into the endzone far right coffin corner type play. I was walking away on the far opposite end of the field completely diagonal to the action on the field to where the play ended. Just turned around to watch at the precise moment when the action unfolds. If I had stayed where I was for the entire game, with the EWU cheerleaders below and in front of me, I would have had a front row seat viewing just a couple yards away. Dick Zornes is the EWU HC at the time. Zornes didn't like the official call on the play. The referees say the EWU receiver caught the ball out of bounds, end of game. Zornes says different. Picture in the next day Missoulian is inconclusive; only shows the top half of the action, if I recall correctly (I don't know if that's on file anywheres).

Anyways, EWU goes on to finish the season 8-2-1 while the UofM goes 2-8-1.

And we've had some pretty good donnybrooks, or a continuation of thereabouts, somewhat enhanced by the aforesaid, ever since.

I think it was Rick Worman who was the Qb on that team. Although it might still have been Jim McElwain. Not sure.

I would venture to say that there are a lot of people that give a shit about POY Awards. These are the highest individual awards given at our level, and EWU has four of them in the last 7 years. No other program comes even remotely close to that. But it's not really about the individual - when you are consistently putting out the caliber of QB that EWU has had in that time frame (All 1st Team All-Americans), well, that is a testimate to the system itself. To try and be dismissive of that fact is really immature, IMO. I know you are a massive homer and all, but come on dude.

And yes, I would take what EWU has accomplished in that 7 year span over what UM has done, and I don't think I'm a dick or being dillusional by saying so. We've had some nice runs in that time, to include travelling to a #1 seed and knocking them out in 2004, doing the same thing to the #2 in 2007, and of course the great run in 2010 not to mention the other years we've gone to the playoffs.

Montana has had many great runs in that time, too. I'm not trying to put the two programs on the same level, but for me personally, when you are talking about a specific span of time, I wouldn't trade that NC for anything. And I'm sure most folks on here would probably feel the same whether they'd admit it or not.

Ahhh.... He's just a little fella! Keep trying little man... Carry on, this is one of the most entertaining threads in awhile. Nothing like watching the whiny little little brother (Kitties are the true little brother) convince everybody he is as good as big brother. Bitchy red response in 3... 2... 1...

Ranger, of course people care about the awards. Shit, they wouldn't hand 'em out if no one cared. But it's a TEAM game, and to use the POY awards to compare ewooo's team to Montana's is patently ridiculous. Yes, eastern has had a remarkable number of POY's and you should, in fact, be very proud of that. But in seven years, you've finished in front of Montana exactly once. In fact, in 20 years you've finished in front of Montana exactly once. Take your NC if you wish. I'll take two NCs, 7 NC trips, I don't even know how many semifinal appearances, 18 of 19 conference titles and all of the other insane stats UM can roll out there.

To even suggest the two programs are equal is laughable; and you have the audacity to call me a homer!

Well, again, I wasn't saying the two programs were equal if you go back and read my original post. You aren't entirely correct with your analysis of the past 20 years, though. EWU won the Big Sky outright in 1997. In fact, EWU is the only Big Sky school other than Montana to do that in that same span of time. That, combined with 2010 would make twice in the past 20 years. I guess the argument could also be made for 2005, even though that was a shared title. Just a minor correction, but I do know where you were going with that. I do feel that there is a tendency by some Griz fans to be dismissive of the accomplishments of other Big Sky schools - I mean, all one needs to do is read through this thread. I stand by what I said previously in regards to what the program has accomplished. It is impressive - that doesn't mean I am trying to say that it is on the same level as UM. But impressive, nonetheless.

Good post, Ranger. And I understand you weren't making that allegation, but screaming (mad) eagle is. It is he who I was refuting with those comments.

And yes, I'm extremely impressed with what Eastern has accomplished. That game scares me every year. I just wish a 20,000 or so Spokanites would be somewhat impressed as well.

Spokane support seriously lacking. I was in Spokane when the Eags played ND thinking I would hit a sports bar and watch while the girls shopped. Not televised, they did air the Cougs getting killed though. I know FBS>FCS but PLAYOFF game!!
