Estes tourney under way
ANACONDA — Action was under way for the 27th Annual Wayne Estes Basketball Tournament in Anaconda Thursday evening as fans at the Memorial Gym were treated to games from Men’s B, Boys’ High School 11-12 and Women’s divisions.
In the women’s game, Team Club Moderne/Hardware Hank/Moodry /Anaconda Disposal/Daily Grind lost 35-30 to the Hoop Mongrels, a team based out of Drummond.
The Hoop Mongrels took the floor with players from Anaconda, Deer Lodge and Dillon. Some of the players were current high schoolers and others had recently graduated. The Mongrels were able to defeat a team of former Anaconda players.
In the High School Boys’ 11-12 Thursday contest, The Dawgs upended Boyer Landscaping/CS Sports Photography 63-45. The Dawgs fielded a team of Butte High players and the Anaconda team was a group of Copperhead players.
Friday night players and fans will gather for the annual 3-point contests. Rochi Estes, Wayne Estes’ nephew, is the defending champion for that event.
The only changes in the tournament this year were player-friendly. The organizers decided to allow six fouls instead of five to allow players to remain in the game longer. The Girls’ High School Division and Boys’ 9-10 High School will be played in round robin format this year, allowing more games for the teams.
A number of notable games will tip off on Friday.
The Men’s Open will begin competition following the 3-point contests at the Memorial Gym. At 8 p.m., World’s Gym of Rexburg, Idaho will play NWC-NWACC, a team of community college players from Washington state.
