Report: Elway's son commits to ASU
Associated Press

Jack Elway, Hall of Famer John Elway's quarterback son, has verbally committed to play for Arizona State, the Rocky Mountain News reported Saturday.

The younger Elway has thrown for 1,677 yards and 21 touchdowns this season at Cherry Creek High School in Denver. He visited Arizona State last weekend, watching the unbeaten Sun Devils beat Washington.
John Elway, who was an All-American at Stanford before helping the Denver Broncos to two Super Bowl titles, is serving as Cherry Creek's quarterbacks coach.

Cherry Creek coach Greg Critchett said he hasn't spoken with his quarterback about his college commitment, but had heard from players and coaches that he had chosen Arizona State.

"He'll be great there," Critchett said. "His style is perfect for them. He can run and move around in the pocket. He's one of those kids where, even if you didn't know his last name, you'd say, 'That's a kid I want on my team."'

Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson was offensive coordinator for Jack Elway Sr., John's father, at San Jose State from 1979 to 1981.

I watched him on Altitude a couple weeks ago. They had Cherry Creek vs. someone. While watching, I was hoping that him and Van Cooper were tight somehow and Van could give him some feed about UM.

A little trivia for you. John Elway's 1st Championship was as QB in Little Grizzly Football. John's dad Jack used to Coach in Missoula. You may have known that, but a lot of people don't. In 1966 Jack Elway was an assistant football coach at UM, under Jack Swarthout. He was such a good recruiter Jim Sweeney hired him away to Washington State.

I listened to two hrs of good stories last weekend about Jack Elway from his days in Misoula. (from a former player) There were some good ones. Sounded like Jack was a pretty intense guy.

I, too, watched him a couple times on Altitude. Kid's got game. Not sure what their record is, but they got beat last weekend (or maybe 2 weekends ago). Down big at half, came back to take the lead only to lose it in the final minute.

You think Elway would send his kid to a classier coach. Coach E is def. not on the up and up... you booze you lose, unless you're Coach E, then you win as long as you're not in the NFL.

I don't like a lot of things Erickson has done while a coach, but I am not going to pile on him because he has a drinking problem.

I'm actually surprised that Smellway Jr. didn't go to the Harbaughs.

The Trees must be pi$$ed.

But could you imagine the griping in Palo Alto if he'd picked Cal?

There would be to many piles to count if you did that to eGrizers

It goes beyond drinking. It's throwing up at social parties in front of players and their families bad. It's having mike barrow and darrin smith carry you home from booster events bad. He's also a horrible recruiter, a bad influence for people's kids, he doesn't focus a damn on graduation rates or scholastics, has been involved in covering up Warren Sapps failed drug tests, et al. I loved him at the U, we won games w him as the HC, but he left that program in shambles. JJ wasn't perfect, but he left it with a recruiting class that only lost 4 games in 4 years (89-92) and gave SOME focus to graduation, even if he's not much for punishment either.
