Ellis Henderson

Baller1

Well-known member
One of the only consistent bright spots yesterday. He shows flashes that remind me a lot of Jabin Sambrano, but Ellis is bigger. Would love for us to start getting Henderson involved in the run game with some reverses similar how we used Jabin. He can take the tops off of defenses all year if we continue to push the ball down field. Bottom line he looked great yesterday and needs more touches in my opinion.

1st deep pass was great! The second time TM went to him deep he overthrew him by 10 yards.

Henderson has been making himself known more and more every week.. kind of a sleeper coming into this year.. he's doing good things.

Put that on my wrap-up, he was maybe one of the brightest spots of the offense. Two big pass plays. The first would've been a TD as well if he didn't have to slow down to catch the pass.

Henderson should only get better, dude is a freshman - could become something real special for the Griz.

I hope coaches are thinking of ways to get guys the ball through the air because teams are about to stack the box on us, force us to throw and if we get good decision making then we will be in the game if not...we get...Saturday vs NAU.

I really like what I am seeking from Henderson he's been a favorite of mine since spring...saw glimpses of his ability even while dealing with nagging hammy. Would like to find other way to get him touches 1.1 per game doesnt get it done either!

The poor decision mainly came out of desperation. When TM can get his feet set he has shown he can be very deadly. He checks down his routes well, and has a great touch on the ball. He just needs to work on setting his feet while rolling out as well as the O-line working on keeping his protection consistent. They started putting a lot of pressure on him in the second half which led to his happy feet and overthrowing guys.

He is a RB not a QB.

The more open a WR is the more he over throws them........its inversely proportional.......I am finishing up the math on this.

Definitely agree. Too many times while he was being chased around back there he tried to force something rather than just throw it away. Once the OLine stopped doing a good job protecting the QB things got real bad real fast. That's all part of the growing pains of having a new QB back there starting his first games ever at the college level. We saw similar things with JJ early on too.

I like the way Ellis plays the game. We need to get him more touches for sure..

Spent some time in the airport in Missoula and back in Phoenix talking with Ellis's dad. GREAT (and very LARGE) guy who played for Portland State while Pflu was there as WR coach. I said "can you tell Ellis to tell McKinney to get him the damned ball!!" He laughed and said, it's gonna happen....

Hopefully what we saw Saturday was just the tip of the iceberg...he's a true game-changer. One of the few we have on offense.

Time to stir this thread up.
I don't understand this, at all. How are people in phoenix and LA seeing things that people in the stands are not? He's only a freshmen so i'm trying to give him the benefit of doubt and i see the "future potential" but what have you seen that shows "flashes" of Jabin other than speed? Two semi-deep completions? is that it? Fair enuf, i guess. I have not noticed exceptional hands or blocking from anyone but sammy who seems to disappear for whatever reason.
I think our WRs may be the weakest link on our O (there, i said it) particularly if TM's decision making improves like JJs did last year. I have yet to see one of our WRs go up to get the goddamn ball. Most of them, even sammy, will sit down and wait for the ball to come find them. It's okay to settle into holes in the zone and wait for the ball to be thrown but once its thrown, go get the m'f'er!!! Drives me f'n crazy. When the ball leaves the qbs hands, all 22 players have a chance to catch it, but only the one who goes up to get it will. Jabin did that wonderfully. I have not seen that from any current WR, other than sammy on occasion.
In fact, Ellis' aligator-arm play made me want to puke, possibly the worst play of the game because it seemed intentional or as if he gave up (hopefully it was just a mistake and he thougth TM was targeting someone else, but i don't think so). Every position has a crappy resposibility. QBs have to hang in the pocket, RBs have to pick up blitzes, lineman have to move, TEs have to block, and WRs go over the middle. You can't give up just because you don't like the duty, or its not a perfect pass. Not saying that's what Ellis did, but it sure looked like it, especially when he didn't try to bat it down. In fact, it looked worse on TV and even the announcers commented.
Our WRs are making our QB look even worse, kinda like how Akpla made black jesus look unreal. I don't think it was the first time this year a pick resulted b/c a WR did not play back to the ball. Makes me sick b/c it is very uncharacteristic of UM WRs. I can only think of one impressive WR play so far this year and that was Cam's right before he hurt himself.

Ellis does look quite natural, and gifted. He has a bright future. Rather it be Henderson, or any WR's, they are not getting open often. Every team does not have a good secondary. It is hard to tell tv, but I am beginning to question how effectively the group runs their routes? Slants and go routes are easy routes to run. How well do they run hooks, flag, and post patterns? How well do they adjust routes, when needed? How well do they recognized prereads?

Something is very wrong with our passing game, and it goes well beyond our inexperienced QB. To be honest, we have a few very talented WR's, Henderson included. It appears to me our passing game is having troubles getting everyone on the same page.

Maybe someone who is at the games can pay more attention to these things, or just McKinney's inexperience?

I'm not sure you can judge ANY of our WR's given the rarity of a pass actually coming in their general direction that's even remotely catchable. Unless of course that pass is < 5 yards downfield.

I agree TM's accuracy isn't the best but he's not as horrible as you make him out. And wouldn't you expect more WRs laying out, climbing the ladder, or turning into CBs on a play? I don't see enough of that attitude; in fact i've seen a couple plays were a WR seemed to give up on the play. That makes a bad pass even worse.
The most impressive passing plays have been to RBs. I realize that's by scheme but it kinda proves my point. The bubble only works when there's perfect blocking by ALL WRs. I think its worked twice this year for 20+. The WRs need to step up and they will.

I watched the replay in question several times (re: gator arms)...saw a similar route vs App State where two receivers were over thrown & the ball ended up in the direction of #7. I can see where the perception is for any WR to sacrifice themselves on a poorly thrown ball.

Unless you have played at this level or higher & been drilled by a LB or Safety running running free you have no idea...so for what it is worth...in my book HENDERSON is 100% legit! He's only going to get better and so will this very young team.

This is a re-load year folks. 8-3 or 7-4 and a playoff berth is fine with me! I am looking forward to the next 3-4 years of Griz football. There is another championship within this Freshman/Sophomore Class of players.

Give it time & show some patience.
Go Griz

There's a lot of improvement that can be made in EVERY aspect of team play. Scheme, play calling, determination & dedication all fit hand in hand. I expect to see this team move forward from the past weeks of inconsistent play into a conference contender starting with this week.

Big Sky has become the most competitive conference in FCS football history and will become the conference of championships at this level over time. No one will survive this conference without at least 1 in conference loss. I see five (5) potential playoff teams right now (Poly, EWU, MSU, NAU & Montana) that has the goods to play in December!

This. Thank you for bringing me back to Earth. I believe my expectations were a little lofty this year and I needed a reality check. My only worry is we go 7-4 or 8-3 and don't make the playoffs. I think two years from now we could be very good, but we better get some Juco transfers or stud frosh in the secondary.
