EliteXC tonight

I tuned in just in time to see local boy Nick Diaz take out Thomas Denny in two rounds on CBS' EliteXC presentation in Stockton. This fight had no business happening as Diaz was on a higher plane than Denny. (Though I was surprised that a guy with a boxing background could take down someone with more of a martial arts training.) In fact, I was surprised that the fight even got out of the first round; Denny looked DIW with about 45 seconds left. They barely got back from the commercial before Diaz shut the door on Denny.

I'm sure the Grizomatic is enjoying this. But I was completely taken all aback by the post-match interview. It sounded just like one of those NASCAR interviews. The local Chevy dealership, his gym. I was having flashbacks to Jeff Gordon, and I don't even like NASCAR.

They're about to start the main event involving some guy named Lawler. Anyone know if he's related to The King?

Anyways, I hope you MMA fans out there enjoyed it. It's not quite to the level of UFC by any stretch, but I can see how one would enjoy it.

EliteXC is (I guess) considered a UFC-style minor league. CBS picked up on it (by mistake) thinking they could compete with UFC. There was some major controversy the first week they aired it because CBS wanted to include streetfighter Kimbo Slice. (They also had one of the new batch of American Gladiators on that episode, Gina something or other.)

This isn't a Stockton thing; it just happened to be in the Stockton Arena last night.

Incidentally, last night after midnight, I was being kept awake by some guy outside my window talking about the card; I guess he was there. Apparently, the catfight they had on the undercard featured a girl with see-thru tights/panties under her skirt. He said something about camera angles preventing that from being seen on national TV. I guess if Grizo had known about THAT, he'd have been there.

I'm going to give EliteXC a chance.

They are a new, upstart MMA company with some pretty good fighters in their stable. Fighters like Frank Shamrock, Drew Frickett, Nick Diaz, Ricco Rodriquez, and most importantly...to me, anyway...Gina Carano.

Not only is she smokin' hot, the woman CAN fight!!!

I'm sorry to say that I missed her fight the first week CBS did EliteXC. I've seen her on American Gladiators a few times, and she was great there.

I just wonder if she could take Hogan. LOL.

Incidentally, would Gina be one of the females like Chyna and Beth Phoenix who could even semi-believably take on men in a wrestling ring, Grizo? I think so.

Gina has already beat a male fighter. It wasn't a sanctioned fight, and I can't remember who the poor guy was, but it did happen!

Like I said, the gal ain't too bad, huh?

Kimbo was on the first CBS episode. He beat the cauliflower-ear guy.
EliteXC was a Showtime creation.

In addition to the fighters Grizo listed to lend this league some credence are Henzo and Royce Gracie, Joey Villasenor, Phil Baroni, Murilo Rua, Yves Edwards, Antonio Silva, and Cung Le.

Hey, Grizo:

Is Gina any relation to former Cowboy flunk-out Glenn Carano? He was there in the mid-'80s about the same time as the other washouts Steve Pelleur and Gary Hogeboom.

Glenn is her Dad.

As far as Kimbo, I've said it before, and I'll say it again...any mid-level, UFC heavyweight, would beat him silly...IMO!

Even as a guy who knows next to nothing about MMA, I could have said that. Most UFC guys have at least two or three intricate techniques, while all Slice has going for him is streetfighting. I'd expect a TQD guy at the very least of anywhere near comparable size to Slice to be able to make mincemeat out of him.

Thanks for the info about Gina. Somehow, I think she's already made more of a name for herself than ol' Pops! ;-)

just a quick heads-up... sorry, unless you're viewing this within a few minutes of its posting, it'll be no good...

Kimbo vs. Ken Shamrock on EliteXC tonight (9-4) on CBS. Its already under way, but the main bout isnt up yet.

And wouldn't you know it.... Kimbo has a glass chin. Tagged with a jab, down he went. The unknown (Seth "Silverback" Petrozelli) wins by way of TKO (strikes).
