By Gazette News Services
CHENEY, Wash. - Kirk Earlywine, an assistant at North Carolina-Wilmington, accepted the head coaching position at Eastern Washington on Thursday.
Earlywine succeeds Mike Burns, who was fired May 30 after three seasons.
The 42-year-old Earlywine has spent 22 years as an assistant at Division I schools, including seven at Big Sky Conference rival Weber State.
Earlywine, one of four finalists interviewed for the position, agreed to a three-year contract that pays $90,000 a year with an option in future years, EWU President Rodolfo Arevalo said. Earlywine was an assistant at Ball State, Utah, Central Michigan, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Weber State and UNC-Wilmington.
He was the head coach at Pfeiffer in 1995-96, leading the team to a 21-8 record and a berth in the Division II tournament.
