Does UM have any say...

I believe it works like this.

Root Sports has first choice for which games they will broadcast. Games broadcast by them are completely controlled by them and UM has no say.

For home games not selected by Root, UM gets to shop the rights around. These games may be picked up by any media company/channel. The usual buyers are SWX, Eleven Sports, Fox MT, ABC MT, MIDCO, etc. Importantly, rights for broadcasting games online (GO GRIZ, PLUTO, etc.) are negotiated by UM with whichever buyer controls the individual game. Thus, sometimes these games are online and sometimes they are not. EDIT: Also, these providers sometimes share rights with channels like altitude network.

The above is similar for away games, but the home team has initial control over the broadcasts. This is also the case for away OOC games. In the case of OOC games such as WIU, their conference has an agreement with local media and ESPN.

Hope that helps.

Root having first choice...was that BSC decision? If it was a BSC decision, did UM have any input or vote to give the BSC the power to sign that deal?

I just keep hearing how UM has no control once a deal is in place, and that is likely to be true, but it seems also likely at some point they have input on it all and if they do it is time for our "rep" to stand up for the fans before any future deals are made with 3rd rate providers. Hell, Watchbigsky didn't work yesterday, that should not be ignored by the conference and UM. Our "rep" needs to get on the BSC.

FWIW I can see UM being okay with Root as it is a quality network production, I just think the Pluto/watchbigsky stuff was ridiculous and not likely to improve unless they really get some heat.

I've watched other conference games on Pluto, they seem to have been better. I think the problem is more with the commitment of the hosting school and/or affiliate to provide better people, equipment, etc.

Sure. What happens is that each home team dictates broadcast. Other teams have quality broadcasters. Cal Poly does not.
