Does Defense win Championships?

Amazing how little offense the quarterfinals had this weekend. Not only did we see the Grizzlies dominate the defensive end, but we also saw Weber with 5 picks and 6 sacks.

NDSU struggled to score, and ended up with only 3 FG’s, in a 9-3 win against an ISU team that they scored 37 on just a few weeks back.

Northern Iowa shut down the high powered Dukes yet managed 0 points of their own. Austin Peay has been scoring well as of late until they met some other team, that did manage 24 points - best output of the weekend.

I don’t see a lot of scoring in the semifinals either.

JMU is an offensive juggernaut. if any team puts up big numbers this weekend my money is on the Dukes

Perhaps, but against UNI, JMU had 10 points until it got a TD with 2 minutes to go, despite having a TOP edge of 42 to 18.

Looking at their schedule they have not played that many quality defenses (West Virginia excluded). Face UNI - who has 0 offense but a good defense that barely subs all game and they struggle to get 10 points. The last 7 was on the QB that took a sack at the 1 after scrambling backwards. I think Weber gives them fits. Can the Cats generate enough O to beat them? I think they can

Considering that all 4 teams left have a pretty damn good defense it seems likely

Yep...it matters.

Also interesting is rushing offense.

NDSU is 4th in the nation.
Cats are 7th.
JMU is 10th.
Weber.....is 55th. They are the outlier here...

Defense and rushing win championships. Running the ball to control TOP, wear down the opponent defense and keep your own defense fresh is huge. Especially when the QB is having a bad day or the conditions suck late in the season.

given the continual short field they were put in, Griz D might have played The best game of any team in the quarters, even with the loss.

Hands-down, that was the teams best defensive performance this year. Maybe ever???
