Idaho Info:
The Idaho Vandals finished the 1982 season at 27-3 (.900), and were ranked as high as #6 in the nation (AP poll) in mid-January, when they were still undefeated*. The 1982 starters were guards Kenny Owens (6'0") and Brian Kellerman (6'5"), forwards Phil Hopson (6'6") and Gordie Herbert (6'6"), and center Kelvin Smith (6'6"). Just before their two losses in January, the team was featured in a two-page article in Sports Illustrated.
*before losing at Montana. They were 16-0 (I believe) when they lost in Missoula as the #6 team in the greatest Griz BB upset win in Dahlberg's history.
Idaho started 82-83' with a 13-1 record, for a combined 40-4 record over a year and a half. not bad, BUT........ the Griz struck again:
The Vandal basketball team could outdraw the Division I-AA football team in the multi-purpose Kibbie Dome, and it was ranked by Sports Illustrated as one of the toughest home courts in America. From January 1980 to February 1983, the Vandals won 43 consecutive games on their home floor. (After a shocking loss to Montana in front of a record 11,800 on February 12th, the Vandals would win their final three home games in 1983.) In Monson's final four seasons at Idaho, the Vandals were 51-2 (.962) at home.
other recently ranked teams in Missoula that I recall:
88-89'-Stanford- Todd Lichti, Adam Keefe, Howard Wright-all 3 future NBA-ers. NIT pre-season tourney game.
96'?-Mississippi State-Erick Dampier
-Griz actually shoulda won this game. we lost in OT . Miss State went to the Final 8? in the NCAA tourney the same year.
Gonzaga-few times. I think we beat a lower ranked Gonzaga team?
only one's I can think of off the top of my head
