Delaney wants 2-3 more years, or more

All Weather....Please read my posts . The comments about flawed hiring practices are in reference to hiring Engstrom and Haslam. I said that we had little choice when Delaney was hired given the circumstances at the time. Should Delaney be given a contract extension if he has a good year? Yes, but only if he has a good year.

Delaney is too old. Period. He tried to retire once, and should now do the honorable thing and move aside so we can start restoring this program to the level it used to be. Not gonna happen with him running the show.

One more comment about Delaney being a great recruiter. He got his butt handed to him by Ash in the state of Montana recruiting war last season. And he also could not close the deal on getting the Nevada drop-down to come to UM (MSU got him instead). So, why is he such a great recruiter?

Narly....you can't get everyone you recruit. Please review all of his recruits....in my view, a very successful recruiting year. Finally, he isn't too old.

I think the long term prospects of the program should be considered. MD did take over during a difficult time but he did make some rookie head coach mistakes. My understanding is he is on a two year contract as interim head coach. The University should begin a head coach search with the understanding there will be an opening after this season. If MD wants the job then let him compete for it. The same for other current members of the coaching staff that may want to become head coach. competition is a good thing.

Your ageism is obvious, perhaps you should be considering that others in time will be contemplating that you are too old for anything.

More important, perhaps you could define what age has to do with coaching ability, the coach is not out there playing, he is out there administrating his years of experience.

Delaney age, has nothing to do with his ability, his ability to render the task is the question, and last year performance was not stellar, and the blame should remain with his inability.

After forty years plus, and never at the helm of anything at the level where he has arrived, perhaps he needed a year to acclimate.

I am hoping for the best for coach Delaney, although not optimistic..

Intuitive, no one is trying to discredit anything Mick has done, but the jury is still out on whether he can be a good head coach and so far, the showing on the field tends to lean towards he is not a very good head coach.

The jury is still out, but there's not much actual evidencem yet, that he's not a good head coach. A couple bonehead calls (by him or someone on his staff) combined with a losing season in last year's situation, is not evidence of his not being a good head coach.

He became head coach, after signing day, under difficult circumstances. He inherited someone else's assistant coaches. He lost his potentially great qb for the season, and inherited a group of qb's with zero completions in their college careers and only 4 total passes in college in total. Name one D-I school in the history of the universe that has ever had as little qb experience.

His team had a lead in all 6 of the games they lost. Some have criticized the OC, who is now gone.

I'm of the view that UM would have likely won every game, had the team had Johnson as the qb last year. Who would be criticizing Delaney now if UM had been undefeated, or almost undefeated?

It's almost universally admitted that he was a great position coach and is a great guy.

JJ is back. Two other qb's have starting experience and are a year older. There's a nice looking redshirt frosh qb. Terrific depth at qb this year. Does anyone not agree that qb is a very important position to any football team? The team has multiple terrific players and considerable depth. There is pent up demand, within the team (as well as the fans), to restore the Griz to where it's been for over 25 years.

Why do some fans have to be such dumbass dicks, especially when they don't even understand the game? Stop embarrassing yourselves and UM football. Why don't support the team and coaches, and cheer for a great season. There'll be plenty of time to bitch during and after the season.

I agree with everything said by PlayerRep here.

I feel dirty just typing that.

He has little ability to render the task, looks lost on the sidelines during games, can not relate to recruits because he is a relic, and obviously wanted to retire a year ago because he was done. Now you want this tired old man trying to work the 18-hour days required to keep this program on top? Ain't gonna happen. He needs to go in 2014, even if we win the NC this coming season.

Narly....don't know your age, but Mick's age isn't a factor. If he can't relate to the young players, how did he recruit them?

Spanky,

Narly is Dill Pickle. I believe he and Barney Ruble were in the same high school graduation class.

...then give him a life time contract...
...see if he can turn thiz caddy around...

... 8-) ...

Delaney is not an "interim" coach. That label was dropped when he was given the 2-year contract. He is in the second year of the contract.

Does anyone start coaching searches a year before the contract of the present coach expires? What good does it do to start a search for year '14, when almost anyone you'd want to hire is currently under contract and coaching in the fall of '13?

Responding to a different post. Delaney is full of energy and has considerable stamina. A former rb who had Delaney as his position coach has posted previously that Delaney relates well with players.

If the jury is still out I think they are only bilking the system for free meals and an extended "dream" stay at the Residence Inn.

To be fair Mick inherited a less than ideal situation but I think any objective observer that watched last season and views his accomplishments as a head coach would find it hard to rate MD as a great or even competent head coach. Quit f***[*] around and be real. How would you rate him if he were the coach of any other program?

My hope for 2013 game days is they tune his headphones into a pleasant golden oldies channel and the coordinators and players get it done.[/quo

By "golden oldies" you mean Dean Martin and maybe Frank Sinatra or what ever they play on the outdoor sound system at the shuffleboard court at the Shady Acres senior appartments, right? Because the visual of the "Mickster" choking on his snot while he is rockin' out to classic rock tunes by Led Zeppelin, Bad Company and Alice Cooper is a bit much for me to take.

Don't bring your new age, smooth as olive oil, grease-ball punk crooners into this. I'm talking proper music, John Philip Sousa or a spirited polka!

The visual of Delaney listening to Polka on his coaching headphones during a game is equally troublesome.
And don't let Alex Bienemann know that is what he is doing. Look out!
