Coach D among five finalists according to GoGriz.com. I like that the criteria are much more that just the win-loss record. Lot of us under appreciate that he is all about restoring character and image to the program and the university by extension. Exemplified by the team this year.

Hope he gets "Coach Of Year" Engstrom fired the last coach with that honor, perhaps there can be some Déjà vu.

Mick D would deserve the honor … and yes, it would be due to restoring the image of “GRIZ character” that tops the list … though the wins would be close behind.

I voted for him before, but in hindsight I feel it was a mistake. Yes there is more to it then just coaching on the field, but coaching on the field is a part of it. I guess I would feel like a hypocrite to vote for MD over the CCU coach. The CCU coach has done great things off and on the field. As for MD he does have some milestones.
First coach since Donovan to not win a playoff game
Worst loss – point difference (NAU) since the last Mick we had at UM
First losing season in almost 30 years.
Worst record (win/loss percentage) of any Griz coach in Wash Griz Stadium
Best record of team he beat in 2 years was 7-5.
Overall record of teams we beat. 61-113.
All this with a very talented group of players.
I think there was something about good graduation rates. I want to list the good with the bad.
All the other stuff was already being cleaned up with Pflu, so to give MD credit would be wrong. I wish MD had implemented all the things Pflu was planning on.

Spot on post Native ! Not much opinion here, just a pile of cold, hard facts. Many people have been the victim of bad timing. This was not the case. The war chest was full of ammo. Joe Moglia simply came in and took us out to the wood shed. The better coach won. Give credit where it is due. :egriz:

I voted for Joe Moglia. There. He impressed me.

by Native's standards, Pflu was the second worst coach in Grizzly History since WaGriz stadium came to be. Snapped our playoff streak and barely won 7 games his first year. Fact is, if JJ had played in 2012, we would have lost 2 game max during the regular season.

Most of the negatives you point out have nothing to do with this year. Last year was arguably the most difficult year ANY GRIZ coach has ever been thrown into … certainly over the last 25 years. Hell, there was no one that would even want the job at the time Mick signed up. We had just about every entity from local, state and federal branches plus the NCAA doing some sort of investigation around the program. Could go on and on about last year but again this nomination is for THIS years body of work. Looking at this year … a solid case can be made … based on tangible game results and bringing GRIZ character in the eyes of the general public back into top tier status.

BTW, having Mick nominated for this award has made for another "positive" article to read about in the papers, etc. something that was nonexistent last year ... due to the BS investigations.

Coach of the year? Absolutely not. The Griz had a 10-3 record from raw talent. Imagine what could have happened with a good coaching staff.

Both of these posts are spot on.
