Delaney comments at roundtable

Coach Delaney spoke at a roundtable in Billings today. Here are some quotes, via the Cat-Griz Insider (Greg Rachac of the Billings Gazette) twitter feed:

Coach Delaney says there's been "a lot of crap" and rumors floating around Griz program, but far more positives

Delaney says Jordy Johnson's situation is "100 percent he said, she said" and it "will work itself out"

I really like Mick and was fairly confident he could smooth out the rough edges, but this was dumb, dumb, and incredibly dumb and will undoubtedly give many the impression that the hole was replaced with a lint patch. It's beyond time to look for a permanent replacement outside the program.

"We won't be as agressive defensively" , true but also went on to say we will only blitz 90% of the time instead of 100% of the time. I like Mick's attitude and no bs style. I think the Griz will be strong. I don't think he knows what the outcome of Jordy will be though. Sounded to me like he has his fingers crossed more than anything on Jordy.

#44 is 110%...he also got word today that his medical redshirt has been granted...

I love this thread, we are talking football, with a few exceptions. Icing on the cake, Jordan Tripp gets an extra year. It is scary to think how much terror he can wreck on an offense, being 100% healthy, and another year to grow.

It is nice to hear some good news, in this terrible, and horrific off season. :thumb:

I hate to say this, but I kind of like Delaney. Seems like a good dude.

I remember when MSU dispatched Sonny and Mick. There were more Cat fans upset about losing Delaney than Sonny.

Delaney is a good guy and a great asset to UM football.

But its fair to doubt his statement he has no idea why Jim Oday and Robin Pflugrad were fired.

Royce fired them to cover his ass and try to blame them for the UM rape fiasco end of story. Its not a secret but Delaney is trying to be diplomatic and pretend he has no idea when the truth is known by everyone including himself.

And yes his comments on football are refreshing. But Royce has some shit coming to him and I look forward to seeing it served to him.

What the hell else would he say? It is not his battle. Have a clue.

He should have said I cant comment on this. Which is the reality. Like I said Delaney is a good guy and its just a white lie to placate Royce Engstrom. But its still a lie.

And it is his fight to an extent. Since he is the one replacing Pflu interim and will likely be the man they pick to replace the recently fired coach in the long run as well. Delaney is an inside man he knows whats going on.

i kinda doubt delaney will be here after this year. he seems out of touch with that comment on j.j. has he been getting access to the details of the investigation or is he just guessing? either way, not good. if he wants the job for 2-3 years he's going to have to get up to speed on how to address these kinds of things.

I'm not sure that he knows, he probably has a pretty good guess, which may or may not be true. What RE was up to is anybody's guess. So as long as we are all guessing, I'm guessing Phlugrad was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Its pretty dang hard to fire the AD for problems in a particular program without firing somebody in the program. Granted Hauck fired the priest and we've had trouble since, but that was too long ago. Saying he couldn't comment is the same as saying "I know it all" (when he doesn't.) Think he gave a pretty good answer and returned the focus to football....

As far as his comment on JJ, it was brilliant. Those who think hes guilty heard what they wanted those who think hes not heard what the wanted and what did Mic say? It'll work out. What does THAT mean???

What's not to like about Delaney? He's a bit more old school but I don't think there's a single player on this team that doesn't respect him. So far what I've seen from his presence talking to fans and the media and how he works with the coaches and the players on the team - is all good.

Of course the BIG test hasn't hit yet, the regular season. We have a guy that hasn't been an HC for quite some time, an OC with 1 years experience at that job, in 2009, and a brand new DC. All I think are experienced and will do well - but with your "big 3" coaches all new/newer to their current position that leaves some questions ahead. I do think they'll be just fine but the real test hasn't come yet.

Love the quotes, listening to Mick talk it's hard not to get motivated yourself, he's a passionate guy and it seems this new job has really lit a fire for him. If Mick wants to keep going and the team responds well - I'd gladly welcome 2 or 3 years of him as HC!

It means that the facts will come out in due time, that the matter will be resolved one way or another, and that it's completely outside of Delaney's control at this point. And it means that, based on the facts as he knows them, it comes down to a question of credibility that only the criminal justice system is designed to resolve. All of which is 100% true.

I agree with most of what you posted. I have more faith in our OC this year, than last year. I will take a coach who has played at the NFL level, and seen everything possible, over a younger OC, anytime. Also Timm's age, and football experience, will likely be more of an asset to the program. Don't me wrong, Smith was solid, and full of potential, with a very high ceiling. I just like what Rosenbach (sp?) brings to the table, than Smith, at this stage. We shall see.

I also believe, Smith had a great benefit, of a lot of offensive experience in Tommy Lee, and Pflu helping make the decisions, and game plan. Got to admit, I loved the results though, in 2011. Will, Delaney give Rosenbach more control, of the offense, than Smith had?

I agree - Rosey is vocal and per what I was told was incredibly well researched on the team and knew things pretty darn well even on day 1 of the job. Rosey and Smith are/were polar opposites in pracitce in terms of how vocal they are and how they react/respond to plays (both good and bad).

Observing Smith in practice he really struck me more as a position coach still, not very authoritative, close knit with a few guys but not really showing any overall management of the assistant coaches under him. That said, the staff on offense overall is full of stand-alone coaches that really don't need a lot of "top-down" management, Beers, Gragg, and Baker all came in with good history and experience - Smith might've been the youngest of all of them, and the least experienced!

Delaney has been an assistant for a long time, it will be interesting if he really digs in with the offense like Pflu did or if he gives more freedom in playcalling.

It is a message board, and I don't care. And, and and and and, um, um, um. How about just using "and" and "um" every sentence, and um would that please you more? Um, and I don't care on a message board. And, um how does that sound? Um, and I think I am done. Or is that Um and I think I am done?

Exactly, a brilliant answer that makes everybody (who has taken a side and everybody who hasn't happy. They heard what they "needed" and gave him their support. I see great things ahead

Great post, this guy has an agenda which will work itself out over time. When it come's up that his agenda goes down in flames he will disappear. :o

Are you talking about a coach or an OC? Just because a guy has played in the NFL doesnt mean he gonna be a great coach.. :?

I like that he calls it as it is but not sure that will work well for him going forward. I'm afraid that being a head coach will teach him that coach speak and political correctness are the safer way to approach things in the future.

"Defense will not take as many chances".....sounds like he will not be the risk taker that others have been.

I hope he does well as head coach and gets the chance to coach for three years.

in refernce to less risk taking, could be that he feels so confident in abilities/potentials of our defense that we do not need to take alot of chances to succeed....
i really like the guy.....
Actually, it's more because this year's defense has only a fraction of the experience of last year's. We could afford to take a lot of risks last year and get away with it. Maybe not this year, particularly early in the year.

The offensive scheme and play-calling will be better because of the new OC, who is a better and more experienced OC. One of the older assistants referred to him recently as one of the best OC's in the country. The defense won't blitz as much because Breske is gone, and the remaining don't believe in as much blitzing and risk-taking as Breske does.

Sending the house blitzing in the first quarter of the NI playoff game cost a touchdown, but overall Breske usually called a pretty good game.
