Defense

Wondering if we might get a topic going on the x's & o's of the defense we saw today and what, if anything can be done to turn things around. Is it scheme or the talent on the field? Position coaches? Another question I have (and I'm not looking to be a negative Nancy) is if the defense does not improve at what point, if any, will stitt remove him? Would stitt go that far seeing as his job may be on the line? And if it were to happen mid season (worst case scenario) who in the interim would fill his role? It's my thought that if the defense really fell off stitt would almost have to make a move to show that he sees the need for a change.

At the risk of repeating myself....weren't we down three projected (and fairly important) starters...as in Sandry, Strong and Strahm? When BOTH backup safeties are playing, there's bound to be a few big plays....the more important questions are....When is Strong coming back and how is Sandry's ankle?

Anyone know how our 2nd half D stats were? Other than the big play seemed pretty good.

From wahlbergs post game observations

about 125 yards of offense if you take away their TD bomb (which was a 77 yard drive).

Agreed on the the missing players and concern for the injuries, however, I'm not sure those missing would have made a difference in regard to the lack of pressure on the QB or the huge running lanes their offensive line opened up fairly frequently on our DL. I had hope that group and the LBs would be the anchor of the defense, but it seemed they were getting pushed around at times, especially in the first half, as was mentioned by the commentators. Again, not trying to stir the pot, just concerned about the defense we saw today.

Interesting perspective. I've seen on here from multiple posters that OUR OL didn't demonstrate DOLA and our run game sucked, and you state that they were opening up HUGE running lanes for their RB's.

We averaged 4.0 YPC. They averaged 3.8 YPC. Couldn't have been that huge.

So pretty good. Clearly the big plays have to be limited and there were too many today. Though I would argue if we eliminate them completely we may not be being aggressive enough. Semore has work to do and I will admit I did have some brief thoughts of our team with a new d coord today but I am not ready to start looking for someone new. If the offense keeps producing and the defense continues to give up excessive numbers of big plays it will be difficult to defend him from his detractors. I do not think we are lacking athletes although AZ makes a good point above. I think we are lacking understanding or communication or both. This is where Semore needs to put his effort in my opinion. He has the personnel.

Im not upset about the offense at all really. I thought the OL looked much better, and probably the most improved position group IMO. I am concerned about the 3.8 ypc against one of the least talented teams UM will likely face this season. I guess I had expected that number to be much lower.

Their QB's were not too shabby. That's where more than 1/2 their rushing yards came from. UM has ALWAYS struggled against running QB's, it seems.

A lot of guys on D got fatigued in the second quarter. Need to rotate in more subs. When Rodriguez came in, he was fresh and played with energy. #33 could have played a lot more too. Need more rotation on hot days like today, especially when the 2-3 deep is so stocked!

I saw a lot of press man coverage and not enough pressure from the front four to disprupt their passing. We saw a lot more zone coverage this spring and fall, but not much today. Vika, MLB, got beat in coverage on a seem route by a receiver but there was no help over the top. That was clearly a mistake by somebody. I am hoping they kept it very vanilla today for a purpose.

Crossed my mind. (Regarding line mostly) If not, we may have an issue.
