Defense

That and our cbs aren't good enough to play man-on-man.

Might want to go back and check again where the errors were on defense with a statement like that.

This was the worst defensive performance by any Griz team in the last 20 year. Horrible tackling. Blown coverages. Inconsistent defensive line pressure. I can understand that a less talented player gets beat. But not blown coverages and bad tackling. The buck stops at the top. Jason Semore may not be the guy to lead this defense.

Ironic, given that 3 of the 4 starters were recruits of P5 schools.

Could be the way they are playing is exactly why 3 out of the 4 aren't still at P5 schools. Ya think??

I'm not a great analyst, but it doesn't take a great one to see that our defense is struggling. Anybody have any explanations as to why we are having such a tough go? The secondary and pass defense seems to be exceptionally rough at this time.

Go Griz

unlike some on the board, I believe this critique of the defense to be accurate.....it may be just little things that need to be fixed but make no mistake, they must be fixed.....the 2nd to worst offense in the big sky jung 44 points on us and had been averageing 22 points a game....

For what it's worth, IMHO. you are both dead on.

I was unable to make the game in person but did see it on TV. There is an explanation or at least a partial explanation for the poor defensive performance yesterday.

After last week it was clear that the defensive secondary is not good enough to play a man to man against elite receivers. This has been a problem all year as evidenced by the game Lorenzo Jerome had against our secondary. NAU & EWU were both able to exploit the long ball against man coverage. This week the coaching staff felt the ISU game would be a good one to implement a zone coverage scheme for the first time this year. The results were what you saw, mixed at best, atrocious at worst. The secondary was in disarray all game. For the most part the Griz played zone, but people were out of position on almost every play. At the start of the second half the Griz did play more man coverage and along with the injury to the QB, did enjoy a pretty good third quarter. Then when they decided to switch it up in the 4th the kids got confused on several plays as to which scheme they were in.

It is extremely difficult to go from one coverage scheme to another in one week when you have honed the instinct to play a specific way to this point in the season. By the same token the staff has to be extremely confident in their players to even consider trying this switch this late.

While yesterday was not a good effort defensively, this experiment could ultimately pay some dividends. They just need more than one week of work with it.

There was far more disarray in the defense than just the secondary. ISU scored their last TD while we still had subs trying to find their positions. The organization and discipline of this unit leaves much to be desired. There is no excuse for that type disarray on game night.

...disarray puts it mildly...
...never walked out on a griz defense...
...had to walk away saturday not once but several...

... :wtf: ...

Worst defensive performance I have seen from a Grizzly team in a long time. Not the all time worst, but not great either. guys were out of position, seemed confused, there was more than one issue with substitutions. Know they were trying to run more zone, but god it looked like the secondary was lost. Whatever the issue is here is hoping to improvement

MSU can't throw the ball, but UNC has to be licking their chops looking at film. Maybe Semore is setting them up.

So adding some new wrinkles at the end of the season, installing them in a game situation over the next couple of weeks moving towards the playoffs is a problem how? Seems to me Semore has a plan that may very well pay some dividends. Time will tell of course

As I mentioned in the game thread, the D backs weren't covering that well in man to man early in the season. We just hadn't met a QB who could get throws to his receivers. When we started playing QBs who could, it was painfully obvious our D backs weren't doing that great in man coverage. Semore, I believe, mentioned they were going to institute more zone coverage and that the D backs would be working on that. I never played the game and am not that great a live game analyst so I don't know if they have tried more zone in the last couple of games. Maybe someone can fill us in on that. If they have tried more zone coverage, it appears they have quite a ways to go in perfecting it, or even playing it moderately well.

And, as others have noted, our safety play in the passing game has left a lot to be desired. With the great safeties we have had in the past, it is disappointing to see. Hope these guys can play better down the stretch as well.

Can you please tell me a game against a good team this year the defense was good? Decent against a few teams but NAU Poly EWU and for God's sake ISU they were horrible and trending down. Can't play man, can't pressure with front 4, can't even play zone...hell can't even get on the field in time to line up in position. Semore is not showing he was a good move for Stitt and domino effect has shown a horrid special teams unit. Trying to strip ball has been costing many extra yards, tackling is sub par to say the least. Not going to mention names....but some big hype guys are not living up to it that's for sure.

Watching replay and damn ISU is all over the DB and wide open. What gives? How the hell could semore fix that!?! It's ridiculously horrible Defense.

Different defensive calls? Different scheme? Different players on field? It wasn't like it was just one play, or one game? Just a thought. Don't know. I like Semore.
