Defense

I think the D will surprise, but there is simply too much change for them to be as good as last year's defense. There are two big issues aside from the changes in personnel. The first is defensive philosophy. With a new coach and a new coordinator there will be a learning curve, regardless of whether those changes are minor or major. The second issue is depth. The thing that made the defense so stellar last year was their depth. There simply was not a great deal of dropoff when one of the second stringer's came in last year. The team was at least two deep at every single defensive position last year and in some cases 3 deep. I do not see that depth of talent on this years squad. That depth from last year is what will make the starters this year a unit to deal with.

I've said it before and will again, this year's team will be a 360 degree turnaround from last year's, particularly early on. The offense will have to carry the team early in the year whereas last year it was the defense that won those crucial early games for us. Come late October and November this year's team has tremendous potential, (as long as they're all not in jail or court). :)

I see that indepth knowledge is everywhere about the GRIZZ football team, which is really nice to see. Very good wide open opnions. I would like to respond to the CB position. This is strictly my own opinion, and I have no other basis to say anything. I really beleive that you will be pleasantly surprised at the CB coming in June. Athletic, good tackler, and plays WR's hands, and eyes really well. I know now, he is working very hard to improve himself to better help that position in any way he can, but I also beleive that his play will get him a starting position. Yes he is a JC transfer, and if you look at Mt San Antonio's (MT. SAC) The Mounties defensive stats, he barley gave up any down field plays. You can't measure the heart by the numbers, and the numbers may not be all that great, however a lot of teams didn't throw his way and he was on that "island" with the other team's number 1. Average height of the opposing WR was 6'3, and he held his own. Yes I am bias, but he is coming to be a GRIZZ, I just hope the fans welcome him and show him the love that I see all over this site. A new fan of the GRIZZ, and I hope to meet you all some day! Height 6' weight 190. He is working landscaping now, laying sod, and wheel barrels of mulch, trying to get that "man strength". I do beleive he just plays

I think you have high hopes...I think we take a step back from last year

I agree. We lost way too many key players on D to be as good as we were last year. Our safeties were a weakness last year. We lost our two CBs. The defensive backfield will have to improve dramatically if we are going to be good on defense.

This. Hermy is fantastic in run support and has good closing speed/takes great angles, but he has some work to do in improving his pass coverage. I believe he will. Tully is fast but inconsistent/makes mistakes and the rest are talented but inexperienced. CB really goes without saying. We are very green and very shallow at that position.

The 2011 Grizzly defense was maybe the best defense in school history. We had a true shut down corner in Trumaine Johnson who could just take away one side of the field. Houston Roots was a complete stud on the other side as well. The Grizzly defensive front seven dominated games and had depth. The Grizzly defense will be good next seaon but I can't see em being better we did lose a couple of guys to the NFL. I think our D-line will surprise some people next season but our secondary will be no where near as talented.....not even close.

Agreed, however I don't think it'll be "bad" but certainly not as good as last years, that was probably a "once in a few decades" alignment of talent this defense had last year.

That said the thing I liked about what they did last year was the heavy rotation that allowed a lot of guys that'll be starting this year to get a ton of reps so they'll not be totally green coming into the season. Wagenmann, Takai, Bienemann, Coyle, Stuberg, Murray, & Hermey all got a ton of reps, add them in with Tripp, Kanongata'a, and Harris who bring a ton of starting/rotating experience and you've really got a defense that returns 9 to 10 projected starters that return with a lot of in-game experience.

I am not a Rominger fan. He has shown me little except for a couple of big hits. I think Lebsock may be the answer. No way our defense this season is as good as last year. Two many starters lost. Waldo will be sorely-missed too.

DE: Josh Harris, Tyrone Harris
DT: Bienemann, HUGE DUDE FROM HAWAII
LB: Tripp, Coyle, JPK
CB Murray, Goodwin JC Transfer

What about Ginn? I thought he was the second coming?

Give it time, he is a freaking FR RS. He does have the talent to be a huge beast. Question, like with many, young players, does he have the mindset, discipline, and attitude, at this level? If he is healthy, he will be given a chance to show us all, one way or the other.

I agree...our strength moved from the defensive backs to the linebackers...lets hope our corners and safeties don't get burned too often.

If their QB is perpetually laying on his back in the backfield we won't have to worry about young DB's. Someone call the coach and pass that along!
You're welcome. :ugeek:
