Defense

One of the big problems for the Griz has been defense. Some of the players offten don't match up well. Others seem to give it less
than 100%.
To keep Brian Q. out of foul trouble it would make sense to play
zone; but not that loosey-goosey match up disaster/ just an old-
fashioned 2-1-2.
To win more emphasis must be placed on D.

I agree about the need to defend better.

EWU only had four subs available for the game last night. Why not put some pressure on them? We sat back in a zone most of the time, and didn’t even play that much man. No full-court pressure. No half-court pressure.

Makes no sense to me, but what the hell do I know? Don’t answer that.

I agree with Ballhog..Thats what has made WSU a success. Defense was the key to alot of our early season troubles. The bigger lineup and a tight zone with prevent alot of the easy drives and put backs..

I kind of view "match up zone" like a prevent defense in football.

I suppose it is a good defense if you have 5 very good defenders. We don't at this point.

I agree, a match up zone is weak, no one knows who you have and it doesnt prevent teams from scoring..I dont think we can man up on teams though..Martin and Stads cannot defend quality Twos and Threes..I think a True Tight zone and at times full court pressure with Celian is the answer.

I completely disagree on the comment that Staudacher is not a good defender on 2's or 3's. Christ sakes, his defense is what got him the starting position this year. Every game he guards the oppositions best perimeter player, minus PGS'. Staudacher kept Weaver and Lowe of WSU well under control. He is not quick enough to guard a quick point guard. He is nails tough when it comes to sticking to his man through screens and on the ball. He is also very physical on anyone he guards.

Go ahead and review the oppositions comments on Staudacher's defense. Check out how many times Tinkle and his staff has praised his defense.

I do agree though, we should use more on the ball pressure with CET, Rundles, and Graves (please play him coaches). Pressure pressure with either one of those 3 on the ball and either Qvale or Vanderjagt defending the paint. Why doesn't Tinkle pressure more with our better defenders? ISU can definitely be beat with alot of pressure. They do not handle pressure defense very well.

If our defense, and defense at the perimeter, is so weak, why are we 1st in the conference in Scoring Defense; 4th in FG Percentage Defense; and 2nd in 3-pt Percentage Defense?

Why:

First in conference scoring defense because we stood around on offense when we were behind with the intent of running the shot clock down. At the time I was not certain it was a good thing and when we lost I was certain that we did not run up the score even though we were behind but we are first.

One why out of three. 2 more below

Qvale will allow the outside defenders to stay out on the three reducing % and reduce FG Percentage by altering shots. These are better things for the future?

The foundation of any team is defense. You don't need talent to play defense, you need some heart, discipline and desire. Tinkle doesn't teach a lick of team defense. Defense isn't broken down individually. Defense is a team thing. They don't cut off the baseline, they consistently let the other team drive the baseline. They don't sag in and help off the ball. They are slow on their weakside help. If they were a good defensive team their opponents wouldn't be able to go on these 15-2, 10-2 runs. It happens every game.

I can guarantee you that these fundamental mistakes are being made in practice and nothing is being done to correct these errors. That is the head coaches responsibility.

It is very disheartening watching a team that is not disciplined and doesn't execute. I am also sick and tired of watching Hasquet walk up the court after throwing the ball away and letting the other team get a layup.

While I don't know what goes on at practice, I will agree 100% about Jordan walking up the court. I am glad someone else noticed it too.

Congrats on the win yesterday, but someone needs to light a fire under Jordan's butt. I watched the game on TV, and saw him numerous times walking up the court, while we were on offense, or on defense after he had lost or thrown the ball away.

I was really disappointed in this.

The coaches teach defense and team defense in practice. In fact, defense is emphasized in practice and was from the first week of practice this fall. I have watched a number of practices and witnessed this.

Defense is pretty good. Only the Cal State game where we gave up over 80 in a game...not bad at all-

Shooting and shot selection kill this team...

While I agree that it gets old watching anyone walk around on the court, take a look at Jordan's minutes per game ( the last 4 especially). This staff has the worst substitution pattern of any coaching staff I've seen in the last 20 years. Jordo didn't sit for 1 second in the first half of Sunday's game. Gimme a break! There's 4 assistant coaches on that bench...not one of them can determine who's tired?...who's dogg'n it?, etc.? I'll also sight the crime pulled on Matt Martin in the PSU game. He absolutely kept this team alive in the first half of that game. How was he rewarded? About 8 minutes and 1 shot attempt in the second half.

Before you jump down my throat on the minutes per game (last 4 games), remember, he only had 20 minutes at PSU.

Note that, in the EWU game, Strait sat in both halves as a result of minor foul trouble. That probably increased Hasquett's minutes. I believe Martin got 6 minutes in the second half at PSU.
