UM appeared to be in man coverage with the corners. The receivers ran them downfield, so they couldn't make the tackles. CP had 5 runs in the series, at least one (and I think 2) of which was/were up the middle. CP gained 5 (Van Ackeren), 2 (Sanders and Van Ackeren), 2/Brown's rush (Van Ackeren and Calhoun), 6 yards (Sanders), 4 (Kose and Sanders). Note that there are no corners in on any of those tackles. When we're expecting pass, and the corners are run off, it's very hard for the backers and safeties to keep runners from getting out of bounds. Note those runs to sideline were 5, 6 and 4, if I'm remembering correctly. The plays were designed to get the runners wide quickly and to have them run out of bounds. It's pretty hard to stop runners from getting out of bounds on short runs if the plays are designed to go out of bounds. Good play-calling and clock management by CP.

I'm thinkin the defense was stellar. One thing I haven't seen mentioned here, apologies if it has been and I missed it, is that we were beat by a freshman kicker (1st ever college attempt I believe) who hit a 49 yarder, in front of more fans than he has prolly ever seen, in Washington Grizzly stadium, with less than ideal weather conditions, and around 11 seconds left in the game. Is it just possible THAT is what beat us instead of "poor" defense? Just askin. :roll:

not gonna lie. after the last timeout when that kid was running out there I gave him about a 5% chance of making that kick in that environment. it was a hell of a play.stilwtrgrizz said:

Once the offense catches up with the defense we have a good chance of having a great team. I always have said we need to wait until after our third game to figure out what kind of team we really have and then I think we can decide just how good or bad we will be and how valid our expectations are. 5 turnovers and still almost got the win. This team is fine and will only get better. Anyone who thinks that cal poly is a"bad" team is out of their mind. The trick to beating them is score early and often and get them to play a game their offense isnt designed for. Gris didn't do that and lost. They will learn from it, and get better. Grizzlies are being battle tested early on this season, which will help them later. We know much more about this Montana team than MSU. State fans really won't have any idea how their team will perform at this point as they have not been tested.
