DeCuire profile in Nov. 14 Missoulian

There's an excellent profile on Grizzly coach Travis DeCuire in today's Missoulian, written by sports editor Bob Meseroll.

DeCuire makes it clear what his brand of Montana basketball will look like:

“Our strength is putting the ball in the basket,” DeCuire said. “At the end of the day, teams are going to have to score with us. We’re going to continue to work defensively and on rebounding, but at the end of the day I’m going to look across at whoever has the scout and ask him if he thinks (our opponent) can score 85 or 90 with us. If they can, then we have to find ways to slow them down. If not, we’ll look at them defensively and figure out how to put 95 or 100 on the board if we can.”

Having watched two pre-season games and a couple of practices, I'm impressed. With many aspects of this team, including the excellent assistant coaches. Familiar, but new: This team starts with the classic Grizzly Hi-lo offense. But they play it at a pace Griz fans have rarely seen. I, for one, am ready for the ride. Go Griz!

i'm anxious to see the "new-look, up-tempo" griz offense because i think a faster pace is one way to compete against teams with superior talent. back in the day, paul westhead had an insane run-and-gun offense at loyola marymount, and his team was never out of a game. i remember watching them against an alabama team that had three future nba draft choices on it, and loyola marymount blew them away, after trailing big early.

then too, there was the most forgettable game in griz history, the game at little big horn against syracuse. (oh, wait, ncaa tournament, san jose.) we walked the ball up,walked the ball up, walked the ball up, time after time after time. will cherry was our point guard, we also had kareem jamar, so we weren't completely devoid of weapons, but cherry walked the ball up every time, looking at the bench, looking at the bench, and it never changed. not in-game first half, not at the half, not in-game second half. we weren't going to beat syracuse in any event, but walking the ball up and giving them time to set up that formidable zone defense was one of the dumbest coaching moves i've ever seen. my ten-year old nephew was screaming at me, what's the matter with your team!, and i was powerless to give any credible answer, we played so stupidly. from what i'm reading, we won't ever repeat that nightmare during the decuire regime.

I'm pumped for this season. Too bad the GRIZ don't have much of a home schedule before conference play. Being on the road will certainly toughen them up mentally.
