Day 1 of spring ball

It was good to see the guys back on the field and take in the sights and sounds of spring camp! Yesterday I caught a little over an hour, there were 15 or so fans in the stands, a few us QB club guys milling around, a few former players, and quite a bit of press.

Amie summed up what's basically lead up to this point pretty well, here's her article if you've not seen it: http://406mtsports.com/college/big-sky-conference/university-of-montana/bobby-hauck-orchestrates-montana-grizzlies-first-spring-practice/article_ad3d762c-7322-5acc-8031-2fdc186a6c4a.html

I'll be probably catching 1 to 2 practices per week, as my schedule allows, but no videos, no live tweets, nothing like that - at the request of the staff and athletic department.

Yesterday was no pads, they rotated guys all over the place, and it was really tough to generally get a "read" on where things are when it comes to offense, defense, special teams, and whatnot. Having been a QB Club guy for a little while now I've taken in my share of Hauck, Pflugrad, Delaney, and Stitt practices, and now it's come full circle as Hauck is back and running things in a very similar fashion to the way he used to the first time he was here.

It's a totally different spring camp than it's been in quite some time. For Bobby a player MUST run on and off the field at all times. Even yesterday in no pads if a linebacker or any defender let up just a little running down a play he got an earful. Receivers caught hell for drops (and there were some of those). There were two fumbles, one was a scoop and score, and the guys that fumbled paid the price, having to run around the field with a ball tucked tight to remind them the importance of ball security.

At one point a player on offense jogged off the field when the 1st and 2nd teams were rotating. Bobby stopped practice, brought the guy back out, and made the whole offense do up-downs. No one would be safe from lazy or half-assed attempts. Additionally praise came heavy when good results happened. As I see it, no player is viewed as being special or a unique asset at this point, which is going to really test a few guys I'd venture.

The O-line is missing some guys, the defense is testing some different looks, at this moment it seems the guys that had the best efforts in winter conditioning are being rewarded with 1st and 2nd team snaps. Once the pads come on (Friday) and as the camp grind really gets rolling we'll see how things shake out. It's a lot more tense and raw in there. The defense was rowdy as hell, but per Amie's article I think the coaches recognize that right now it's a little manufactured. They want this team to get to that point on their own, without having to be encouraged by their coaches to do so.

This coaching staff as a whole is very vocal, and much like Bobby's prior staffs he's got some guys there that chew everyones ass when they're mad and some other guys that are there to build guys back up and support them when good things happen. It's going to be a fascinating spring camp, one unlike anything these players have experienced at Montana, while it was just day 1 I liked how I saw them responding.

thanks b/w, also, thanks for posting Amie's article....look forward to the rest of spring practice updates...

Thank you, BW! This is actually the best info I have heard about how the day went. Amy's article didn't tell us what it was like from a fans point of view. I like hearing about how the coaches and players are interacting.

So it was loud and cold but the loud was fake?

Fake loud, real cold haha

By the way, thanks for the info. Nothing against Amy but your info was far more informative. Definitely interesting to hear how things will play out this spring. Hope everyone comes around and buys in. I think there’s a lot of talent on this team which the last staff did a good job of recruiting but maybe not the best job of coaching them up. That’s something that Bobby definitely will have a handle on.

Curious if Pease is still a chewer or if he has become a builder? I know how I’d bet.

Was chewing a bit, but not all the time, as best I could tell. Seems to be more his style though.

It appeared like Pease's natural reaction is to chew but he caught himself several times before opening his mouth. The red face gives it away though.

Hard to gauge much from the practice - and more so from the defense - but it was fun to finally see them on the field. The most visible drills lending any indications were probably receivers and quarterbacks. There was a long ball thrown over Bingham's head and headed out of bounds (I thought) but he made a fantastic one-handed catch in bounds. He and a couple younger receivers looked pretty impressive.

Bobby had some colorful, heated comments to one of the receivers on a couple of his turns at a drill and asked him what part of #$@!&* don't you understand? But the next time the receiver did the same thing, it appeared Bobby realized the receiver really didn't understand so Bobby took him aside and talked to him in a teaching manner and gave him a pat on the back as he left. He didn't mess up again.

I can't even begin to say how happy I am that discipline, high energy, physical football is back under the "M" ! That is exactly why= "We are Montana"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! More than anything else attitude is what we have been lacking.= Bobby Hauck attitude! Coach Stitt did his best but the physicality of Montana football just hasn't been there!!! Bobby and his staff will get this straightened out and the machine will roll again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2018 will be a Grizzly kind of year. = Win the conference, beat the pussy's and get two, or more playoff wins min. No doubts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Griz!
See you all on the 14th! :) :)

Love the excitement but dang you really need to learn how to properly use punctuation and equal signs. I could not understand most of that. Maybe just a refresher on grammar in general. Anyways, I can say that least you’re optimistic.

Agreed. I'm thinking of sending him to stay with argh! for a couple of weeks to rehabilitate his attitude.

Haha :thumb: In all seriousness, a positive attitude goes a long way. Sit back and enjoy the process. This team has a lot to learn with a new coaching staff; so we need to let them (the coaches and players) learn, practice, fail, learn again, practice, and eventually succeed. God knows they don't need any negativity from a damn message board.

*personnel :D

Gavin Robertson is a "Off the Bus" 1st team selection. The Soph is well put together.

Hill is going to shine at TE. He ran an out-route to the wide side of the field while QB Tanner Wilson bootlegged and rolled out to his side (left). Tanner, while still on the run, delivered a picture perfect leading pass that HIll comfortably brought in--couldn't have been a better pass.
