This really just opens up too many opportunities, re EWU ... some others.
Actually, after the big furor -- sparked at least in part by the Reddit postings -- the NCAA cranked up a new rule to address the problem.
NCAA said:
NCAA Statistics – Countable Opponents
For games to be considered countable for statistics (including rankings and records), the
following must be true:
• The institution must be a four-year, degree -granting institution.
• The opponent must be considered a varsity intercollegiate team as defined by NCAA
bylaw 17 and must be considered countable competition as defined by NCAA bylaws
31.3.3.1 (Divisions I and II) and 31.3.4.1.1 (Division III).
• The institution must satisfy one of the following:
. o Is an active, provisional or reclassifying member of the NCAA;
. o Is accredited by one of the six regional accrediting bodies in the United States;
. . . Middle States Commission on Higher Education
. . . New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education
. . . North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, The Higher Learning Commission
. . . Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
. . . Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges
. . . Western Association of Schools and Colleges, Senior College and University Commission
. o If the institution is located in Canada, it must satisfy one of the following:
. . . Is a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada;
. . . Is a member of the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association; or
. . . Is a member of the Canadian Interuniversity Sport.
. o Is an active or associate member of the NAIA; or
. o Is an active member of the National Christian College Athletic Association.
As I read the rule(s), a legit school can still play the "College of Faith" kind of schools, and even list the win in their athletic publicity stuff, but it (and the associated statistics) does not count for anything else.

They still played games against an NCAA opponent last year.
Yep. Sorry ... I should have been more explicit with my last statement.

If you're a really crappy and/or desperate program, you don't give a s**t about "no stinkin' NCAA rules" since you're not in the running for anything. So you kick out $10-15 thou to have a home game where you can kick a** for the fans. Plus ... in the spirit PC ... you give the down-trodden, low-GPA, (mostly) no-talent "dreamers" on the fake-college team a chance to play in a "real" college football game. Pathetic ... but "it is what it is."

My wife's been seeing a fake yoga instructor since last year. Seems like a lot of this "fake" stuff going on.

No. Your first post was great. I was just trying to make the point that the NCAA rule didn't really work.

Best,
