Quarterback Dave Dickenson lost to Montreal Alouettes counterpart Anthony Calvillo for outstanding player honours, in a controversial vote conducted by the Football Reporters of Canada.
Calgary lineman Joe Fleming (top defensive), Montreal's Ben Cahoon (Canadian), Andrew Greene of Saskatchewan (offensive lineman), and Bashir Levingston of Toronto (special teams) also won major awards.
Dickenson might have joined them, but may have been the victim of 11 votes that were not cast by eligible FRC members.
In a news release, the league said Calvillo received 34 first-place votes. However, a CFL official confirmed the 11 non-votes were added to Calvillo's total. In reality, Calvillo won by a 23-21 margin.
"I knew it was going to be a close vote," said Dickenson. "But I don't think (Calvillo) outplayed me. That's just the way it goes."
One consolation: Dickenson was named most outstanding in a survey conducted of players during the season by the Regina Leader-Post published Saturday.
