D-Linemen, the Buck Buchanan Award, and Tyrone Holmes

The award was first given out in 1995 (after the Payton Award was designated as an offensive award)

Of the 20 recipients, 10 have played on the D-LIne (9 ends, 1 tackle)

9/20 recipients played at schools currently in the big sky conference (ISU, Cal Poly (3), MSU (2), EWU (2) UM)


Below is a quick look at the previous D-Line winners:

Chris McNeil- 1997 North Carolina A&T- Tallied a then FCS record 21 sacks

Al Lucas (DT) 1999 Troy- had 126 tackles (twenty for losses), 15 quarterback hurries, four sacks, and two forced fumbles.

Jared Allen- 2003 Idaho State- had 17.5 sacks, 102 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, six forced fumbles, three recovered fumbles, and nine pass deflections

Chris Gocong- 2005 Cal Poly- had FCS season-record 23.5 sacks and led the nation with 31 tackles for loss. He recorded 98 tackles, caused four fumbles, recovered two others and deflected four passes.

Kroy Biermann- 2007- had 70 tackles, 15 sacks, 18 tackles for a loss, and five forced fumbles

Greg Peach- 2008 EWU-had 72 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 18 sacks, one pass broken up and one fumble recovery

Arthur Moats- 2009 James Madison- had 90 tackles, 23.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, and one fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Caleb Schreibeis- 2012 MSU- had 59 tackles, 12.5 sacks and 15 tackles-for-loss, hurried the quarterback seven times, broke up four passes, and forced 8 fumbles.

Brad Daly- 2013 MSU- had 68 tackles, 14 sacks, 20.5 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles, 2 blocked kicks, and 1 interception

Kris Emanuel- 2014 NDSU- had 97 tackles, 19.5 sacks and 32.5 tackles for loss, nine quarterback hurries, three forced fumbles, and 1 interception.

The average sack total for Buck Buchanan recipients on the D-Line was 15.6. If you are looking only at DE’s, the average sack total increases to 16.9.

The average TFL was 23.5

Tyrone Holmes has 82 tackles, 20.5 TFL, 17 sacks, 9 QB hurries, and 2 forced fumbles.

Holmes already has a higher sack total that 5 of the 10 past D-Line recipients, and his TFL totals are greater than or equal to 4 previous winners.

True, but they only count REGULAR SEASON stats when handing out these trophies. So, subtract 3 sacks and a couple TFL's and QB Hurries....

Oh, and he's not going against Moats (and I know you realize that). The only guys whose stats matter are the two he's going against this year.

I caught that mistake about an hour after I posted it but screw it, don't let facts get in the way of a good argument.

Thought it'd be interesting to see the stats of past dline winners...gotta kill time somehow

And for the record, he got screwed out of the BSC POY and will probably get screwed out of the Buchanan too.
