Well GRIZNATION, believe it or not it really is hard to come up with how to put things after this game. Being I am not one to bash any program, I am looking at this as 1st game jitters. I refuse to lose faith in any team over 1 early season game. With the 90 mile drive home, I had time to come up with some positives, and let time take it's course this year.
I have read the posts here, and to be honest the CSU poster was very accurate on this game. Our defense is not as bad score indicates, and there was effort too. Our defense looked very good early, but when our offense could not throw it in the ocean, the GRIZ lost their composure on both ends of the court. CSU greatly benefitted from both McGillis and Hasquet having absolutely horrible offensive nights. I doubt we will see both them have terrible offensive games in the same game again. I hope Hasquet can somehow learn to not let offensive struggles effect rest of his game. He let that happen again tonight. As for McGillis, offense or not, he is INTENSE, tonight overly so. Intensity got him in early foul trouble then CSU's offense took off from the perimeter, then Qvale sat down. We were without our best perimeter wing defender, and our best interior defender.
As for CSU, every part of their game was precision, especially their defense. I am not sure if the GRIZ were tipping their defense off or what, but they were on the ball before the ball even got to man the ball was being passed to. They mixed/disguised their defenses very well too, but one pattern I noticed. They shaded their defense toward our better perimeter shooters with 3 perimeter defenders, They used 1 big in paint, and 1 with some great on the ball pressure. They had their hands up to make seeing the passing lanes difficult, and yes they were very quick. I was more impressed with CSU's defense than disappointed in the GRIZ offense. Base on what I saw tonight, CSU will be near the top in defense in the MWC this year. To beat CSU's defense that ball has to move much faster than the GRIZ were moving it. When we did make a good pass, we had way too many bobbles leading to turnovers.
Offensively CSU hit some very tough shots against us. I do admit we gave too many easy ones too. In the 1st half their baskets came when the GRIZ over anticipated, meaning the effort and hustle was there, but the GRIZ were trying too hard to guess where the ball was going. They need react, not guess. They guess wrong a few too many times.
We have some very talented young bigs in Qvale and Selvig. By end of the season they will be securing the ball that they are now getting their fingers on. They had position on CSU often, but somehow they just did not secure the ball. CSU outquicked us on the boards or let our bigs touch it then tip it as it hit their hand. Same loose balls on the perimeter. Yes we did have guys diving for loose balls, they were going to floor hard!!! So do not say we had no effort. By time there was 8 minutes left in the game we were just plum defeated and worn out, that is when the defense did not look so good.
Offensively we tried to move the ball around, we tried executing, but the shots were all contested and the ones we did get off just were not falling. Offensively though I did see 3 very encouraging things. (1) Qvale has improved his post moves, moving without the ball, and footwork. He is also much more coordinated this year. This kid will have a very good year. (2) Selvig is solid, he has nice moves, he is smooth. He is a great passer. Our offense did much better when he was on the court. Selvig still needs to adjust to the consistent physical play at this level. (3) Ryan Staudacher cannot be shaken, his shot is smoother than ever, he is also much quicker and slender now. He will be amongst the nation's leading 3 point shooters!
I am sure the butterfingers on offense and rebounding will leave this team soon. Once again, offensively we very seldom have anyone taking the ball to the hole (ARGH). This drives me crazy every year since Matthews and Criswell left. Against CSU we had 2 guys show up offensively, Stauds and Qvale. That was it.
Defensively, either we need to develop another guy behind McGillis. Johnson and Banny (sp?) are capable, but I feel it will take time for them. Also when Qvale and Selvig are in at the same time teams do not get open looks in the paint. Selvig will be good but just like Qvale last year, he leans a little too much. In time he will be straight up. Too bad we cannot combine Selvig and Hasquet defensively. Hasquet is very strong and holds the post well. Meanwhile Selvig covers alot of ground and is much more agile than I thought he was. Too be honest, overall I was very impressed with Selvig. It will be nice to watch him mature.
Brian Taylor is very good overall player with no major weakness. Tonight he was much more effective than CET on both ends of the court. Personnel wise the difference in the CSU game was that McGillis, Hasquet, and CETdid not have their games. That was a difference of 30 points right there. In my opinion rest of the team did their part, but not many teams anywhere can withstand 3 of your 5 starters struggling, even worse when 2 of those 3 are your top 2 players.
Yes the outcome was disappointing, but for those not there, you are being much too hard on Tinkle. Plain and simple Jordan, Jack, and CET just did not have it tonight! That will be the 1st and last time we see that this year!!!!! Seriously, this loss was bad, but nowhere as bad as some of you are making it out to be. IT is a long year, and performance wise tonight will not happen again this year from those 3.
