Crunch time: which Montana Griz will step up?

As a rabid Griz basketball fan since 1952, I learned early that ... when the end of February rolls around, anything can happen. Most eGriz crazies understand. You’ve all lived it. A kind of quantum basketball energy takes over.

That’s what makes this game worth following. Can’t be explained to anyone who hasn’t experienced it.

As Montana fans, particularly since 1971, we’ve been pretty lucky to see a lot of good teams succeed or fail. Since 1991, we’ve seen 11 Griz teams go on to post-season play, seven since 2000. Eleven other teams fell just short. Those are good odds for Griz hoops fans.

A couple teams won (or lost) because of a ref’s mistake; others by an unlucky bounce. Others because a player froze up... or rose up! A couple of those teams just fell flat (1985), and a couple came from nowhere to win big (2000, 2010).

Here’s my point. You can never really predict which team will actually step up at crunch time. The 2014 Griz have had an incredible year of ups & downs for sure. But I’ve watched enough college hoops to say that they’re good enough.

So, now it’s up to them. I firmly believe this team has the tools and the players at every position to compete. They’re all good kids who’ve sacrificed a lot of time and effort to get here. They’ve had a couple of bad breaks... bad bounces. But in order to move on they can’t allow any more of those "bounces" to happen.

I’m a believer in the 2013-14 Montana Griz. Every one of them. Now it’s up to them to make it happen. We’re about to find out if they have what it takes. I'll be there. Wouldn't miss it.

Go Griz.

I have thought all along that UM would make the tourney. Thought it was a lock until last weekend. Then looked at the schedule, and saw some tough games. Still think the team will be fine, but it is time to win some more tough games.
