Crappy Missoulian Griz Hoops Coverage

Once again, the Missoulian has limited their pre game coverage (this time of tonight's Davidson game,) to a small blurb in the briefs section on the second page of the "Sports" section of today's paper. They devoted more and better space to a write up of Idaho State thrashing of some team named Grand Canyon. They did same lousy job the day of the North Dakota State game. Davidson is a very good team and possibly the best opponent the Griz will face at home this season. Attendance at the North Dakota State game was poor. I think the Griz BB team deserves a lot better local support than they are getting and the minimal coverage provided by the Missoulian sure isn't helping! :x

I agree. It's DAVIDSON! There should have been an article on page 1 of Sports.

it isn't just the Missoulian, it is the entire UM effort to reach out to alumni, fans, anyone. AmericaOne is a near failure in promoting Big Sky teams but it is about all the options available to actually view a Big Sky team. I wish it were different but it isn't. And, I doubt seriously if it will ever regain what was lost before the age of media contracts that seem limited to geographic area. It used to be nothing to just stream the games. Now, it is rare. The digital age takes ten steps forward, and sometimes 11 steps back. But, that being said, I will listen to this game as I think Davidson is a sleeper in the South and it will be interesting to see how two teams that play the long ball shot match up. Gonna be a good one if both are hitting the 3s. Defenses are also good....both teams have played some big time programs this year...and this is a good way to see if it shows.

I don't like the lack of coverage and the lack of effort by University of Montana either. With that said, in my opinion, gogriz.com is great value. I do it monthly starting in football season, through basketball season. Granted, if I were living in Missoula I like would not need it. Due to my schedule not working with the drive time, I can only take in Saturday games. I suggest you all try gogriz.com for home game webcasts. It works great for me.

Sadly, I agree about local coverage of the Griz and Lady Griz basketball programs.

Here's an example: There's a great live interview with Travis DeCuire, published early Tuesday, that has been TOTALLY IGNORED by all local media outlets. It's hard to hear, but worth every minute, because it illustrates (better than any previous interview with TD) that Travis DeCuire possesses truly top-tier basketball knowledge.

This will be a very tough game tonight. TD knows it (and explains why). But he's looking forward to the challenge. Montana has not won a pre-season home-court game of this magnitude since Wayne Tinkle's first year as coach (against Colorado State), or perhaps Montana's win over Stanford in Larry Krystkowiak's second year as head coach.

A win tonight could do more for the program than any publicity. But it'll be a very tough challenge for the "still-learning" Griz. HERE'S THE LINK TO THE INTERVIEW. A must-listen pre-game.

Travis is pretty candid and honest. His demeanor is amazing. Always so calm and collected.

On a related note, what ever happened to Root airing BigSky basketball games?

"Q: How many games will ROOT SPORTS televise, and what will the production quality be?
A: ROOT SPORTS can televise up to 18 football and up to 12 men's basketball games. All games will be High Definition. DirecTV/ROOT SPORTS is investing in the Big Sky and plans to make our games marquee events."

Today's Missoulian limits it's coverage of today's game to the same dinky little blurb in the "briefs" section. It also neglects to mention the ESPN3 broadcast of the game.

Yup, very disappointing.

Drive past Washington Griz stadium. You know there is a football team!

Drive past Adams Center. You would have no idea it is the home of a great basketball team.

I drive by Adams Center and realize 2 good team basketball teams call it home. But do agree with this topic. Why so hard to write a little blurb about all upcoming home games for both men and women's games? Isn't that "news" for the day? Plenty of speculative articles about the pending and now finalized FB coach hire. Speculation and rumors aren't news though; upcoming games on the BB schedule are.

There's another reason for the lack of Missoulian sports coverage besides the coaching change and that's Bill Speltz has taken another job. And has moved on. And it appears that they're replacing him in-house.
