Congrats to Sentinel

This is absolutely unbelievable. Yes they beat a Glacier team who starts 6 sophomores and the rest juniors. And yes the did beat Hellgate after the snapper put it over their punters head(The same thing happened earlier in the game to the sentinel punter, he got the kick off) And yes 6 Hellgate players quit before the game, they are quitters and probably didn't add much quality to the team as athletes or people. Sentinel had one of the top 3 toughest schedules in the state. By week 6, 4 of the teams they had played were all tied with one loss a piece. There aren't too many teams who would have won those games. And why are you tired of hearing Sentinel kids talking about how good they are going to be every year? Aren't teams supposed to think that way? Or would you rather have them walk around like Hellgate, "if we beat sentinel, its been a good year!" come on man. They finished ahead of two teams in the double a, a bad team and a team that runs an offense that is hard to prepare for. They had 9 weeks to get their offense right and sentinel stopped them, its a good AA football win. Butte beat Glacier and Sentinel. Weird, no one is saying anything about them. Thanks to the people who wish Sentinel the best of luck.

Way to make some harsh judgements about the kids at Hellgate :thumb:

Here is a judgement for you.....Sentinel Parents SUCK....they have for 40 years

With all due respect, Missoula High Schools don't really have inter -city rivalries like other towns. Maybe they used to, but they don't now.

That is one of the problems with the "open campus" principle. You have next door neighbors that have kids going to different high schools. There is no clear line. Heck, at the game the other night, the crowds were sitting right next to each other.

I am willing to bet that doesn't happen in Great Falls, Billings, Helena, etc.

I think the open campus situation is one of the main problems with Missoula sports in high schools in general.

This isn't meant to slam any of the particular high schools here. I just think the lack of a neighborhood identity with a particular school is wrong.

Yes they do suck, but man are they loaded, you see those sweet uniforms. Hellgate parents are sure way better aren't they.

Being a Graduate from Capital High I can say that during almost every crosstown game whether it be Football, basketball or volleyball there is a definite separation between the two. During football the home team gets one side of the field and the away team gets the other. During basketball the line is a little less clear but the students are on one side of the court with parents and adults sitting between the two.

Why is that a harsh judgement of the kids at Hellgate?? Did you read the thread?? - this is about Sentinel "sucking"! As a Sentinel supporter who spent three years at every miserable game (BTW there were 2 wins in there) I witnessed that attitude from every AA school, not just Hellgate... "God, I hate Sentinel!..." What in hell was...is...there to hate??? You have the team ESPN terms the losingest high school team in America...and everybody HATES them?? As if losing and being the object of endless ridicule isn't enough?? I sat among the Sentinel parents (and there were some doozies - some we avoided sitting any where near if we could help it), but I saw and heard the same assinine and obnoxious behavior from some of the parents and adult supporters of other teams, and that stupidity crosses rival lines as is evidenced in this thread. I'm not from Missoula, I grew up on the Highline - we had our rivals but I never observed or was a part of the kind of vitriol I see between the public high schools in this town...especially Hellgate and Sentinel. I don't get it - it's obviously really deep-seeded with some of you...I guess based on your own experiences. But do you all forget these are kids (and I'm not just talking Sentinel here)...doing the best they can with circumstances and school admins and athletic directors and coaches and over-zealous parents over which they have no control??? Hate your own experiences and duke it out with each other but give these kids a f**king break.

From the Wednesday Missoulian, Letters to the Editor:

High school football
Coach set horrible example at game
I am sure those who watched the Sentinel versus Hellgate football game felt as I did, that it was one of the most exciting crosstown games in years. One in which we saw both schools' kids giving all they had until the last second. The finish was worthy of an ESPN highlight. The field flooded with students, the teams exchanged handshakes and all looked as it should be.

Then it happened..

I watched from a few feet away as a Hellgate football coach threw his headset to the ground and stormed toward a Sentinel football coach. He stepped into the other coach's space and began screaming at him about how he felt Sentinel had called an illegal pick on the touchdown that put Sentinel ahead with only a few minutes left. He proceeded to berate the surprised coach, then he stormed off looking for Sentinel's head coach, to whom he repeated his rant.

I watched as stunned students, players, parents and other coaches from both teams looked on. To their credit, none but the single Hellgate coach ranted on.

I will not even argue the merits of his accusations. Rather, I will denounce his behavior. Our teachers, coaches and all others entrusted with the responsibility of the minds of our children hold a sacred trust. One in which actions speak louder than words. Where words - like sportsmanship, honor and integrity - must be the very backbone of the foundation of that responsibility.

Friday night I saw two schools, two coaching staffs and two different examples being set. Let me just say I am proud my sons go to Sentinel and I am ashamed I graduated from Hellgate in 1980.

"6 Hellgate players quit before the game, they are quitters and probably didn't add much quality to the team as athletes or people"

Is this not a harsh judgement or do you have some pertinent information about the circumstances to add to the discussion? Or maybe that was you giving these kids "F**cking Break? Do you honestly believe or think that the Sentinel Football team is somehow unique in losing that many games? ESPN may think so....try talking to a Hellgate Fastpitch player sometime.

As far as the rivalry goes...seemed worse when I was in school. Things happen throughout the history of a school that build rivaries with other schools...nothing new. Personally I think the addition of Big Sky in 1980 combined with being able to go to any Highschool you choose, screwed this situation up royally. I grew up here and have friends that went to other schools....we all hate the other persons school....it's the way it is. When we grew up...when little Tommy/Sally got his feelings hurt....little Tommy/Sally was told to grow the F up. Missoula over the years has turned into a place where everyone has to play/participate...a why keep score kind of town. I guess if that's what people want now a days...that's what you'll get. In the mean time....Sentinel still sucks.

On the bright side, basketball season is here for Sentinel! :thumb:

Garland, Henkel, and best damn freshman in the state, Ben Roberts. Mark my words, this kid will be a superstar. The only thing that might hold him back as a Freshman is a coach not wanting to mess with lesser talented SRs' egos (not named Garland or Henkel).

For anyone that has not seen Roberts play. He is worth the admission, and already has 1A talent. His game is already well rounded and unselfish, but capable of taking a game over if and when needed. He also takes pride on the defensive end. Sentinel and Missoula basketball fans better enjoy this kid while they can. He WILL turn many heads and may turn out to be one of the best ever from Missoula, possibly Montana.

He is the 1st and only FR I have ever given creedence (sp?) to. I have faith in saying this already, knowing he works hard and his parents will not let him get a big ego or attitude. If the Sentinel coaches get him into the mix of 15 minutes per game without damaging upper classman egos, this kid is the difference in Sentinel playing for the State championship and folding much too early. Call me crazy if you like now, then go watch him play, then tell me you disagree with me. If Sentinel plays him strictly JV, they will being doing their program an injustice. I have no doubts he is already good enough to be TOP 3 at Sentinel this year!!!
