Talent wise this years team has more depth than any other team
I have seen in the Big Sky. It is true that some players are new;
but the recruiting was very strong the last several yrs. Its obvious
that WT needs better assistants; Griz coaches cannot lead a team
without its respect. Larry had Brad. At the start of the season one of the more recalcitrant players stated that he could get away with
anything this year. :lame:
In what way is it obvious that Wayne needs "better assistants"? IMHO he has good assistants. Marso was especially successful as the head coach of one of the premier JC hoops programs in the country. Remember, Marso was hired by Krysko before he left. Hill was also hired by Krysko. :twocents:
Back off the assistants please. Granted I do not have time to attend every practice, nor as many as I would like and have no idea what happens at practices I have not observed. However, I have observed practices under LK and WT. Each practice and/or clinic I have learned something very valuable from each coach. From what I have observed each coach uses the right mix of understanding, criticism, encouragement, and expect each player's best effort individually and as a team. This staff does not lack in it's efforts or its thinking.
Yes this year's team has been a rollercoaster as for results. IMHO this "team" collectively is to be held accountable as a whole. The coaches and players are to share equally in taking responsibilty for an inconsistent season. I will not argue anyone that regarding this team falling short this year. But to place blame directly on a few individuals for the whole year is not right.
Early in the season was a matter of our perimeter game struggling majorly. Many games they have executed the offense, the shots just did not fall!!! The offense still struggles for stretches, but very seldom struggles a whole damn game anymore. That is a good sign. Another good sign is bench players are stepping up every game in conference play. Offensively, compared to many 1A teams this team executes much better than average.
Defensively, early in the year we had way too many assignment breakdowns. Those breaksdowns have been much fewer and further in between as for assignments. YES, NAU 1st half was very bad as for team and individual breakdowns. I credit BSC opposition for great coaching and better scouting. Fact is, teams have figured out we so heavily rely on Hasquet and Strait offensively that teams benefit dramatically in attacking the paint. Hasquet and Strait are both solid defenders, problem is we have "no" paint defensive presence to lessen the burden on them. We also do not have big enough guards to help out the way Criswell and Matthews did. Ellis can't being his job is ball pressure and denying his man the ball. Martin is best playing the passing lanes and can hold his own on the ball. Dloughy and Mayes are too busy concentrating on any given teams best scorer. Our defense is best when Dloughy and Mayes are playing the 2 and 3, only then we have the luxury of a guard able to help in the paint.
Defensively, there are 2 players I feel would be huge helps to us for versatility, size, and what they bring athletically. Unfortunately, they do not see PT for whatever reasons. Swift and Vanderjagt I believe have the right make up to be defensive assets, but this year just are not.
If this team were so bad, we would be getting blown out every game. That is not the case. We are "in" every game. Every game is close and comes down to "crunch" time. This team is not as far off as record indicates. GO GRIZ, prove me right and win another BSC tourney!!!!!! :thumb:
