Listened to the Tootell and Nuanez football hour yesterday. They do a really good job with covering our Griz. Colter had a segment on his top 10 Griz newcomers who he thinks could have impact. They are:

10. Kordell Pillans - JUCO transfer from AZ, O Lineman
9. Braxton Hill - coming off gray shirt, LB
8. Cole Grossman - coming off gray shirt, LB and stand up DE
7. Marcus Knight - JUCO transfer RB
6. Corbin Walker - True freshman 3 star CB, said he was the most talented true freshman defender
5. Mylal Tolliver - FBS drop down CB from Hawaii
4. Moses Mallory - JUCO OL transfer, needs to lose some weight at 350 and get in better shape
3. Mason Vinyard - FBS drop down LB/DE from Wash St
2. Joe Babroa - FBS drop down DE from NC State
1. Milton Mamula - RS Freshman who is hopefully getting healthy could make big impact and is a physical specifmen

Totally agree with #1 IF he's healthy. IF he can stay on the field, I think we have a guy that will be a problem for other teams. If he's not able to play consistently, I personally think Vinyard, Mallory, Knight, and Grossman will make the biggest impact soon. Love Vinyard's size, Mallory's size and attitude, Knight's speed, and Grossman's physical potential. Can't wait to see how they contribute to the team this year and beyond.

Is this based on watching them in practice, talking to coaches, or just reading about them and guessing?

He’s been to every practice so some personal opinion but at least first hand influenced

How can this be? His profile pic still has him in an arm sling.

I would pretty much reverse this order.

1. Pillans is going to start.
2. Grossman is running with the 1's already.
3. Knight is going to share carries and will keep getting the rock if he holds onto it.
4. Tolliver & Corbin are going to be needed at some point this season. I don't think Rowland is going to cut it.
5. Hill is a beast and should see playing time and will be awesome on special teams.
6. Babro is intriguing but I think Grossman is ahead of him still.
7. Not sure Vinyard is impressing yet.
8. Mallory may be playing shape by conference play.
9. The reason Mamula isn't that intriguing to me is that he will be on pitch count if he's healthy enough. Special Teams at best this year. I think the coaching staff slow plays him a little. The guy needs to recover.

I have yet to hear Vinyard, Babros, Rice or the other 2 DEs expected to contribute McGourin or Hurlburt during fall ball yet, I have not heard Tolliver and very rarely have heard Roland or Corbin, but I have heard Gradney quite a bit. Pillans will start and Grossman will be special, another Freshman I’ve heard a lot about but probably won’t play because of depth is Jesse Owens.

I haven't seen anything other than pre-camp about Vinyard and Rice. There was only this small tidbit written about Babros in the first fall camp report. I'm waiting to hear more about all three of these transfers that I expected to make an impact.

https://gogriz.com/news/2019/8/6/football-summer-work-pays-off-for-griz-in-opening-practice-of-the-season.aspx

"D-line transfer Joe Babros showed the skills that brought him to North Carolina State before coming to Montana in one-on-one defensive drills, shedding some blocks with ease."

I think we’ve got 40 new faces if not more. I think this is Colter’s best guess at the top 10 he thinks will have some type of impact. I think we are getting wrapped around the axle with the order. The important thing is if all these guys contribute and make some noise it makes our team better.

Thanks Coach, this is a fan forum tho. We are supposed to debate stupid things.

My thoughts on why Gradney could be an early starter:

Overall, Trevin's long-speed is college ready. The tools are clearly there to be an early starter. He has the athleticism and awareness to fit into any type of coverage or scheme. He is a long-armed ball-hawk who understands how to maximize his length to disrupt the catch and take it away. He is armed with route anticipation, ball skills, and college length that teams covet in a press-man corner. Right now, Trevin is more comfortable in zone but developing press skills takes time. If his development goes as planned, Trevin will be a corner you can "leave on an island" in no time at the next level.

Indeed, we do that better than anyone :)
