Coach's Poll

I thought ewu's defense was better than cal poly. I thought cal poly defense was pretty terrible.

Thats because you have the best offense in the FCS. Im not looking forward to the Griz playing Dakota and the boys this November. This is the year of the Cats!

I think the Big Sky is over rated yet again. Montana has no offense to speak of and MSU and EWU have terrible defenses. Would be a tall task for any of these teams to make a deep playoff run.

Montana has no offense to speak of yet! I think they're still learning and will improve as the schedule goes on. MSU and EWU will always suck at defense.

Not sure I agree with your comments about the EWU D. Through the first 4 games, it obviously looks bad, but you have to consider who they've played. And although they had a poor showing in the first half on the road against Sac St, they regrouped and pitched a shutout in the second, holding Sac to only 16 yards rushing. When you look at the remainder of EWU's schedule, the defense will almost certainly look better from a statistical standpoint, as we won't really face many opponents that have great offenses like an Oregon or an MSU.

Reasons for optimism...almost all Freshman and Sophomores starting. They will get better with experience. I also love the size of our interior defensive line, which has 4 guys that are 6'4 290 or bigger.

Agreed with the comments about the Big Sky at this point. Nobody is really sticking out as a team that looks like it could get a deep playoff run, and the conference is a bit of a shit show right now in terms of W/L records.

It will be interesting to see how things play out. With two losses each, both EWU and UM will need to run the table in the Big Sky to get a good seed...MSU can afford one loss, but if EWU runs the table MSU risks getting a lower seed due to the HTH. Also interested in seeing if Portland State can keep rolling. Should be an interesting next several weeks.

I'm not too concerned about Eastern's D. Played well against Sac in the 2nd half and had 2 great qtrs and 2 bad ones against UNI. Throw Oregon out the window and it leaves the MSU game. Eastern's D was on the field the entire game, all 8 of Eastern's offensive TD drives were 5 plays or less and all were under 2:30 in the MSU game. Eastern's D was gassed and it showed in the 2nd half. Credit to MSU but our D had to keep going out because our offense scored to damn quick every time.

Lot of room for improvement, but the young Defense will get better and surprise a lot of teams this year.

Sac St definitely looks like an offensive juggernaut....makes the EWU defensive effort look pretty tremendous....

Well don't look now, but we're starting to play some D over in Bozeman. Not perfect by any stretch, still had some blown assignments, but we're very young and appear to be gaining confidence.

But like others have noted, you still have Ash and November. Even if they get better, a melt down is still coming.

Think I will wait for more than a 1 game sample by the Cats in which the they still gave up yards and points, but did improve on 3rd down...

I agree about UM offense improving and EWU D will likely suck till the end, but I am concerned about Bozo State D coming on. It takes time for so many transfers to gel and that group in my opinion have shown some flashes. They could be good by end of the year which would make state tough to beat.

Who are these transfers you speak of. Only one starts(Carter), the rest are MSU products from the beginning except for Keeton who came in last year.

But they did look solid against that D2 team as well...haven't you heard about the massive season changing hit that linebacker had for the cats??

You can tell by my snarky sarcasm that I've never played? I have! And coached!
You clearly have no sense-of-humor! And if you do, it will go away in November when the Cats back their way out of the playoffs.

Back to the poll ....

2 monster games in the valley this weekend, should bode well for UM, MSU, and EWU as two teams ahead of them will lose for sure...could see all three crack the top 10 come next week...

Possible, as long as all three take care of business ... and win.

Yep. Unfortunately for the Cats, until Coach Ron Ash gets the axe, the meltdowns are as predicable as anything. Given his track record, I honestly cannot believe they still have him on the payroll. I suppose the culture of late-season meltdowns helps, but when will the administration and fan base want to change it? I'm not an MSU fan (in case everyone couldn't tell), but those players and fans deserve better. Sad.
