coaching styles

It's interesting how some people in here think they can analyze coaching styles, and recommend improvements, based on facial expressions they see in a handful of close-up shots during television timeouts.

There are as many successful coaching styles as there are successful coaches.

Someone in here noted how Roy Williams chewed ass during a timeout when UNC was up by 15. That works for Roy.

Ever hear of John Wooden? He was a pretty successful coach, if I remember correctly. He never chewed ass. He would clap for the player who was returning to the bench during a substitution, and then, during a discreet moment, one-on-one, he would give the player a quick glance that said it all. Only two people in the crowded Pauley Pavillion ever even knew the silent and effective message had been exchanged: the player and Wooden. If you don't believe me, read a few books by his former players (Alcindor, Walton, etc.).

Dean Smith wasn't exactly an in-your-face ass chewer with his players during games, but Bobby Knight definitely is. Different strokes for different folks.

The real coaching style and relationship between coaches is built and demonstrated during the five or six days per week we never see. It's called "practice."

I know for a fact that players used to laugh about Montgomery's antics that he exhibited during games. The respected him greatly, but they knew the antics were just Monty being Monty.

They respected Stew Morrill every bit as much, and Morrill wasn't an ass chewer, not even when he led us to play top-ranked UNLV in the opening round of the NCAA tourney.

Tinks is going to do fine. If you want to get all worked up about it, go ahead. I can't stop you from being you. But you also have to be willing to let the coach be the coach. To suggest he needs to develop a "game face" for ESPN is silly.

Mark my words. UM is going to the opening round of the NCAA tourney in 2007. I can't promise an opening round win, but we're going to the dance.

As long as they defend like they did today they will be fine. They kept people in front of them and didn't give up a lot of easy looks.

I'm excited as hell about Cam Rundles and Austin Swift. I don't know what that has to do with anything here, but I just thought I'd say it.

Excellent post. I have to laugh when people attempt to analyze the game while listening on the net/radio.
