Coaching - Good and Bad

There has been a lot of talk lately on Griz coaching (ironically from the same 2-3 posters who start 15 new threads a day on it….also a good chance it’s the same poster using all 3 handles 😂😂). But I agree some of the frustrations are warranted. I have some of those same frustrations and have been vocal about wanting to see a change at OC as well as OLine.

However, after watching some of the recent playoffs games this isn’t just a Griz problem. There have been some horrendous coaching decisions taking place with plenty of good teams.

UIW for instance…..they dominated the bison in every single statistical category (except turnovers) and literally coached their way into losing that game. They passed up taking points at least 3-4 times by bypassing the FG and going for it on 4th down instead. They were only successful in 1 of those 4th down attempts. They passed on a chip shot FG to tie the game with about 5 mins left. They also ended the game trying to drive with two timeouts still in their pocket. Some real head scratching decisions there.

Then you take the Cats. This is a team that literally ran their way into the semis. It was their absolute bread and butter as they were one of the best rushing teams in all of FCS, but SDSU was able to shut it down to an insane tune of 52 total rush yards. They averaged 1.5 yards per carry. We were told no one could slow down that offense or run game. Cats fans will say the field didn’t help (horseshit, they both played on it). They will also say Chambers getting hurt didn’t help. That I agree with….but from a different perspective. Injuries are part of the game and next man up. What it did do though is lead to their OC absolutely shitting the bed with the offensive play calling once chambers was out.

They have a 3500 yard all American RB in Ifanse who got the ball 7 times….I’ll say that again….7 times for 28 yards. How does that guy not have 20-25 carries in this game, ESPECIALLY when you lose Chambers. Tommy was completely ineffective trying to get to the edges but they tried to force him to do so. The passing game isn’t their forte, but they forced that as well….and they were passing early so it wasn’t a “we have to pass because we are down by 20” situation either. Then to top it all off, when they were down by quite a bit and got to a 4th and 7, they tried a disastrous fake punt that rivaled FFGFPTB from the year prior. It was blown up quickly and sdsu took the ball back. In that situation, why don’t you leave your actual offense on the field who gives you the best chance at a first down.

Lots of head-scratching coaching decisions by big time coaches in big time games that didn’t help their teams in the least. It happens all over the place.

I too wondered why Ifanse didn't get the ball more yesterday. He ran all over William and Mary last week.

Vigen got severely out coached yesterday. Not only did Ifanse get 7 carries, I don’t even remember seeing Elijah Elliott yesterday. If he wasn’t healthy then that makes sense, but it’s crazy that Vigen was so committed to Tommy running up the middle every time. He took an absolute beating yesterday.

I agree that they should’ve committed to the passing game. They were actually having success with that and moving the ball across the middle of the field. Just seemed to me Vigen wanted to continue using their dual QB game plan and was unwilling to adjust.
