Cliff the 1st down machine

So it was recently commented on how good Cliff is at picking up 1st downs with his feet(been pretty good with his arm too lately). I decided to do a deep dive into his rushing attempts and see just how often he’s collected 1st downs. I did this by going through each games play by play stats. Excluding sacks, he has ran the ball 90 times gaining 543 yards, averaging 6.03 ypc. He’s gained a 1st down 39 times. That means 43.3% of the time, he’s getting a 1st down when he runs. More impressive is his success rate on 3rd and 4th downs. Now obviously he usually doesn’t have as far to go to get the 1st, on average needing 4.9 yards per the 25 times he’s ran on those downs. Averaging 5.76 ypc, he’s succeeded 19 times, good for a 76.0% success rate. That means three out of every four times he runs on clutch downs, he’s succeeded.

Thanks for crunching the numbers. That quantifies what we’ve observed. He has done one heck of a job!

He has also greatly improved on his early season tendencies to sit in the pocket and hold onto the ball too long. Overall I’m very impressed with how he has emerged as a confident leader. Glad he is a Grizzly!

Yup, as he’s gotten more comfortable with the playbook, he has certainly shown massive improvement from early in the season.
