Cherry, Qvale listed on NBA 2014-15 rosters

Decided it best to modify this post, because of the obvious. BOTH Will Cherry and Brian Qvale are now formally listed on NBA rosters, Cherry with the Toronto Raptors and Qvale with the Charlotte Hornets.

The Toronto Raptors' newly updated roster features Will in the top row, #1, now in a Raptors' uni.

And Qvale, #41, is included on the 18-man Hornets' roster:

There's also a roster page for both former Montana standout players over at NBA.com: http://www.nba.com/playerfile/will_cherry" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Look forward to be following a couple of new NBA teams this season.

Congrats Will and Brian! Have a great year with your new team.

You are correct about Qvale, GrizWhiz. No guarantees yet. For Will as well.

NBA teams can suit up 13 players and are allowed 2 or 3 (team choice) players who cannot suit up. Those players normally join a team on the bench, dressed in street clothing.

That means that both Toronto and Charlotte will have to trim their active rosters to 13 and their salaried players to 15-16 within the week.

Guess we'll see how that shakes out. I have read that the signs for Will are promising.

I like Cherry 's chances of making their 15 man roster. He is a true defensive shutdown guard. That is a hard role to fill in the NBA. Most coaches prefer to have someone with that specialty. Plus Will can be better offensively, he just needs to find consistency with his offense. Defensively, Cherry can be depended on every time he takes the court.

Qvale has some long odd's. He is also rarity, a true back to the basket Center. He really does not have a weakness. Unfortunately, he really does not have a strength to separate him from other Centers. I do feel he is capable of playing in the NBA though. There are some awfully bad Centers in the league.

I wish them the best and hope to see each be in the NBA this regular season. :thumb:

I believe Brian is considered a longshot to make the Hornet's final roster.

Who considers Qvale to be a longshot to me the roster?

I was figuring Cherry would be a lock but this article in Bleacher Report dosnt see it the same way.
Toronto Raptors’ Greg Stiemsma appears likely to win final spot on roster
At this point, Greg Stiemsma almost deserves the final spot on the Toronto Raptors’ 15-man roster. In the Raptors’ second pre-season game, Stiemsma took a hard fall in a game against Sacramento. He subsequently failed a baseline concussion exam, missing a game.

He eventually passed the test, but came to speak to reporters on Monday with a bloodshot eye, the result of being poked on Friday against Oklahoma City.

“I guess when it rains, it pours,” Stiemsma said.

Nonetheless, he is likely in the best position of the three applicants to make the team. Stiemsma, point guard Will Cherry and swingman Jordan Hamilton all came to camp with non-guaranteed contracts. More than likely, the Raptors will keep one of them to fill out the roster, although it is possible they could elect to keep the spot open until they have a need.

If they do decide to fill the spot, Cherry appears to be a long shot. He was brought to Toronto to be the third point guard behind Kyle Lowry and Greivis Vasquez, but coach Dwane Casey has been using combo guard Lou Williams more at the point, with decent success.

Of course it is Bleacher Report.

This is from yesterday's Toronto Sun.

Time is running out for a couple of players hoping to crack Toronto’s roster.

Only one of Greg Stiemsma, Jordan Hamilton or Will Cherry will be a member of the Raptors when the season kicks off against Atlanta on Oct. 29.

And that’s not because any of them have played poorly during training camp. Stiemsma, a 6-foot-11 centre, who, from the outset has been the favourite to land the gig, given the glaring need at backup centre, has been as advertised — a solid rebounder and defender.

Hamilton, a scoring swingman, has been tremendous, averaging 10 points a game on 62.5% shooting from the field and from three-point range in the pre-season, while Cherry, a defensive-minded point guard, has made his mark mainly in practice.

“It’s going to be a difficult decision, because all three guys have done something special, all three bring something to the table,” head coach Dwane Casey said after practice on Monday.

“Will has played hard in practice and given Kyle (Lowry), worked him hard, has done a good job. He hasn’t been given a chance to show a lot in games, because we were experimenting (with) Lou (Williams) at the point. Greg has done an excellent job in spots and then Jordan has scored the ball at a high level. All three are NBA players in their own right, so it’s going to be a difficult decision for us. It’s a good problem to have because that means we brought guys in who fit in with what we do, and fit into our program.”

Casey expects to go with his regular rotation for Friday’s exhibition finale, which means Wednesday’s game against Maccabi Haifa could be the last chance for the trio to show what they can do in game action (though Casey says their work in practice has been just as important).

The cuts need to be made by Monday and Casey said it will be “a good debate with the coaching staff and management.”

Casey said everyone will have a say and added that the strong relationship between the coaching staff, general manager Masai Ujiri, assistant GM Jeff Weltman and the rest of the front office makes it a bit easier.

“We talk all the time as far as (evaluating players). They know exactly how we feel, and we know how they feel. So it’s a team effort.”

The Raptors are deep at the wing, which is why Hamilton told the Sun after a big game in Maine last week that he knows he is auditioning not only for them, but for the rest of the NBA.

Though Cherry brings something different to the table, with Lowry, Greivis Vasquez and Williams ahead of him on the depth chart, he would provide more of a luxury for Casey compared to the need Stiemsma would fill up front.

Stiemsma, who is trying to make his fourth team in as many years in the NBA, said being under the microscope can be tough.

“The nerves are OK, but it’s a roller coaster,” Stiemsma said.

“It can be up and down day-to-day, but you just have to try and stay consistent, control the things you can control, worry about those things, and just let the chips fall where they may.

“We’re heading down to crunch time, so I just have to do as much as I can to make an impression and try to stick around.”

Qvale has been waived per the Hornets website.
Sigh....

I hope Brian is prepares himself to be picked up somewhere this season. It is a matter of time before a few bigs get injured. It happens every season. Brian needs a break in having a few solid paint defending bigs going down for long periods or season ending. I am selfishly hoping to see him in Denver, LA, Chicago, or OKC. :thumb:

Can Brian get picked up by a D League team?

I know that was how Will had the time to demonstrate his skills.

Hope Brian can get some interest from a team needing frontcourt depth.

will did not play in toronto's exhibition game against the knicks last night--but neither did the two other contenders for that final spot on the roster. seems the raptor staff has made a decision. we'll know monday noon, latest.

just a temporary setback. will is knocking on the door, and those knocks are getting louder and louder. he turned a lot of heads in las vegas. somebody will pick him up, sooner or later. i'm betting on sooner.
