Changing Things Up

Thanks to back to back losses, EGRIZ is full of suggestions, complaining, bitching, doubts, haters, naysayers, etc. Reading through the threads, some have brought up some good things, some not so good. I do feel, it is much too soon to lose faith in Stitt, his coaches, and players. I feel the foundation is solid, and the future is bright.

With that said, many want this season to be a great one. By winning out, the GRIZ can secure a home playoff game, and take things from there. Winning out is very possible. It is hard to fathom, a team putting up so many yards, struggling to convert yards into more points. To me, that is a sign the GRIZ have the personnel, coaching, and strategy in place for better results. They need to find consistency in utilizing the opportunities they are creating for themselves.

I feel a few changes in personnel utilization would help some. What really frustrates me are who and what is being utilized on various play types, especially in the redzone and key 3rd and 4th down situations. 3rd or 4th short, the play being a long pass, dive to Nguyen, or pass behind the LOS? Rather it be Gustafson changing the play or what Stitt calls, it is not being productive against solid competition (NAU and EWU).

It is common place for teams to run endzone fade routes to convert TD's, but using a 5'7" or 5'8" WR matched up on a bigger DB, instead of using a 6'2" plus WR, with a physical advantage? As great as JLM is, a fade route or jump ball to him in the endzone is not utilizing personnel well. We have how many 6'2" plus WR's, Why not utilize them properly in those situations? It even makes less sense how well the likes of Bingham and Horner have been playing. Granted, Horner is now injured. Bingham is strong, big, and catches most everything thrown his way. Hovey, Homan, Taylor, Eaton, Curran, and Simis are all 6'2" plus. In the redzone, the size and strength of those guys are much more needed than the open field playmaking of JLM. How many BSC defenses have 4 DB's at 6'1" or taller to match up with that kind of WR personnel? My guess is, ZERO (then again, I have not looked it up). Shouldn't those be the WR's expected to make the plays in the redzone, or critical 3rd and/or 4th down plays when the QB has to throw one up for a WR to make a big play. That is what EWU has done so well over the years. They trust their WR's to make the plays and their QB's know where the best advantage is. No matter who the QB is, they have done this all of Baldwin's tenure. For the most part they are successful at it too.

I'd really love to see Coach Stitt and our QB's to show faith in the bigger WRs to make big plays. Even if the plays don't work, it is a step toward progression, and building their confidence up. Here is to hoping we see that for however many games the GRIZ have left this season.

Good post and GO GRIZ.
IMHO this offense runs the best on getting the first down on two plays, bang to the line and repeat.
Where it goes south is 3rd down (ok stat boys probably not right), 3rd and short is a breath holder.
Would love to see the stats on BG changing the play success ratio.
Football wins usually does come down to the basic premise of who wins is stronger, faster and bigger.
Attitude.

I don't know why everyone gets so bent out of shape when people mention Chalich having a set of plays when we get in scoring position (especially around the 5). He throws well, and he runs well. So far we are leaving way to many points on the field. 1st and goal at the 4 and settle for 3 is not going to beat ewu in Cheney. We have to punch that thing in right there. Make the defense adjust..

Considering the GRIZ are struggling to convert yards into points, it would not hurt to give it a shot. Regardless of who the QB is, they have to find the endzone more consistently to make the playoffs, and maybe even have a run. Despite the losses, I honestly feel this team is capable of doing just that. They just have to find that consistency. :thumb:

I am sure Coach Stitt and the whole team would agree, they have to find consistency.

"Consistency," per se, is not always a good thing. They've certainly been consistent the past two games -- high offensive yardage output, low scoring output. Hopefully those weird results are not a trend.

Thank you. I made the same point in the Chalich thread as well. Brady's immobility is a detriment when the field shrinks. Chalich is a fifth-year senior who brings a whole different set of variables and intangibles to our offensive arsenal.

Classless fans questioning our coaching staff once again...Don't you know how many hours these coaches put in? You think you know personnel and scheme better than them? This fan base has hit an all time low and threads like this make me want to vomit. Griz fans are so horrible - easily the worst fans and human beings on earth.

It would be great if they educate us, why use a small WR on a endzone fade route and/or jump ball, instead of using a taller bigger WR for that? That is a legitimate question. I am not asking or expecting anyone's job, anyone to be replaced, calling anyone any names. Being you are such a terrific fan, I am sure you can fill us in, with all your football knowledge why the GRIZ are choosing to throw to small WR's instead of bigger WR's in these kind of situations?

Another question, not related to football or the GRIZ, Who pissed in your cereal?

I don't understand Stitt's obsession with throwing into the flat to tiny, ineffective receivers. It was Naccarato previously and now Lyons who keep getting opportunities despite rarely producing more than a cpl yards. JLM is completely different (he's actually good) but Stitt got greedy and ran him into the ground and paid the price when he got hurt. He runs the same plays to Lyons, who has no chance to get more than a yard or 2 most plays and he keeps expecting him to make a JLM-like play but it's never gonna happen. I don't think you have to be a college coach to realize that Lyons is no JLM.

It doesn't really matter if Lyons catches the ball of JLM, if your receivers can't block down field.

Excellent analysis mtgrizrule! It really is just some little things that need cleaned up. A JLM at full speed again will add to that. If Horner were healthy, Bingham and him should be on the field together. +1 to bigkid as well!

I like to mix Apple Jacks and Multigrain Cheerios...who's with me?

Also, I agree with posts about not throwing passes to little guys when you have a short field to work with.

Imagine Bingham catching the ball and getting five yards start towards you, a CB. Do they wear depends?
