Thanks to back to back losses, EGRIZ is full of suggestions, complaining, bitching, doubts, haters, naysayers, etc. Reading through the threads, some have brought up some good things, some not so good. I do feel, it is much too soon to lose faith in Stitt, his coaches, and players. I feel the foundation is solid, and the future is bright.
With that said, many want this season to be a great one. By winning out, the GRIZ can secure a home playoff game, and take things from there. Winning out is very possible. It is hard to fathom, a team putting up so many yards, struggling to convert yards into more points. To me, that is a sign the GRIZ have the personnel, coaching, and strategy in place for better results. They need to find consistency in utilizing the opportunities they are creating for themselves.
I feel a few changes in personnel utilization would help some. What really frustrates me are who and what is being utilized on various play types, especially in the redzone and key 3rd and 4th down situations. 3rd or 4th short, the play being a long pass, dive to Nguyen, or pass behind the LOS? Rather it be Gustafson changing the play or what Stitt calls, it is not being productive against solid competition (NAU and EWU).
It is common place for teams to run endzone fade routes to convert TD's, but using a 5'7" or 5'8" WR matched up on a bigger DB, instead of using a 6'2" plus WR, with a physical advantage? As great as JLM is, a fade route or jump ball to him in the endzone is not utilizing personnel well. We have how many 6'2" plus WR's, Why not utilize them properly in those situations? It even makes less sense how well the likes of Bingham and Horner have been playing. Granted, Horner is now injured. Bingham is strong, big, and catches most everything thrown his way. Hovey, Homan, Taylor, Eaton, Curran, and Simis are all 6'2" plus. In the redzone, the size and strength of those guys are much more needed than the open field playmaking of JLM. How many BSC defenses have 4 DB's at 6'1" or taller to match up with that kind of WR personnel? My guess is, ZERO (then again, I have not looked it up). Shouldn't those be the WR's expected to make the plays in the redzone, or critical 3rd and/or 4th down plays when the QB has to throw one up for a WR to make a big play. That is what EWU has done so well over the years. They trust their WR's to make the plays and their QB's know where the best advantage is. No matter who the QB is, they have done this all of Baldwin's tenure. For the most part they are successful at it too.
I'd really love to see Coach Stitt and our QB's to show faith in the bigger WRs to make big plays. Even if the plays don't work, it is a step toward progression, and building their confidence up. Here is to hoping we see that for however many games the GRIZ have left this season.
