There have been a couple of recurring themes throughout the season from a coaching perspective that have been bugging me that don't seem to have been discussed much lately so I'm just gonna throw them out there ...

Defensively all season long our CB's have lined up a solid 10-12 yards off the receivers while the safeties are only 5-6 yards behind them. While I understand that our safeties are week and need as much help as they can get it seems like it's not leaving a lot of room for the safeties to get over and help cover if there are problems. From what I have seen our D-line and linebacker core is one of the better in the Big Sky and yet we aren't allowing them any time to actually put pressure on the QB. Even when we blitz, with the 10 yard buffer we give the receivers the hot route is ALWAYS wide open defeating the purpose of blitzing. Why not have our CB's line up tight and start disrupting routes and pull our safeties back and just have them make sure that NOTHING gets in behind them?

Offensively what is going on with our tempo? I know we have different coaches but the offense we are trying to run isn't that much different. In the second half of games last year we kept our tempo and often times increased it, kept the subbing to the minimum and wore out the defense on the field. We usually had about 15 seconds or less between plays and this year we hit the second half and our temp dies, we sub a lot, and allow the D to get their plays and subs in before we are even set again. What gives? I thought that was the great part about the spread option that we were running was there were a lot of plays for every player package and didn't have to sub a lot or change formations? Is it really that hard for the HC/OC to get a play in quickly enough for us to keep the tempo up? I have a hard time believing that our guys are in that bad of shape that they need to keep subbing especially lately when our offense barely sees the field in the second half...

Am I missing something here or is there a reason behind all this?

EDIT: Sorry for what has to be one of the worst thread titles ever posted...

I like the fact that now Ellis Henderson is back there returning kickoffs; I thought all along, even before the season started, that he and Dennard would be the two I'd have back there returning kicks. Someone finally got around to it.

I agree completely. I know what they are attempting to do and that is try to keep everything in front of the young corners and try not to get beat deep. But when they aren't beat deep they are handing EASY 6-8 yard outs to the offense that just chews up the clock and accumulates first downs. And, they are also getting beat deep consistently, so why not just line up and jam at the line and at least if you get beat you get beat honestly.

When the Cats press receivers, they end up chasing them into the end zone. I think the Griz are much the same. To date, UM is 7th out of 13 teams in the BSC in scoring defense, 7th in total defense, 2nd (behind......MSU) in rushing defense, and, dead last in passing defense. This also shows up in sacks and interceptions - UM ranks first in these categories, but it's likely due to the fact that everyone is passing at will against them. If the D-line and linebackers are as good as you say, they should make the D-backs shine. MSU has anemic d-backs, but the front 7 so far have made up for it.

On offense so far, UM is second in rushing, but 10th passing the ball. Total offense, UM is second. You're moving the ball, and should have a better record in my humble opinion than you have. You've found some very creative ways to lose football games. Good teams find ways to win. Flash forward to what bad teams do......

This isn't trash talk. I root for UM every weekend with the exception of the Brawl, and have for nearly 40 years. No disrespect for these kids or the coaches, but facts are facts. We're all witnessing one of the most disappointing seasons in the last 30 years.

Wishing UM wins 2 of the next 3 games.......

The corners are not lining up 10 - 12 yards deep, for starters.

I agree, that has been a problem for the Griz for about ever. We never seem to push or bump the WR's EVER!!! Always seem to play way off.

I truly believe it is a lack of talent in the secondary and a bad defensive scheme. We don't disguise blitzes very well for starters and last week on 2 separate occasions I saw the outside linbackers line up inside the tackles, show blitz and then have to sprint out to cover the slot recievers on the snap. Both times the slot recievers caught passes one for a first down. I should point out that the safeties were rolled over the top of the slots, but at 15 yards deep it doesn't do a lot of good especially if the other team only needs 5 yards to get a first down...or a full head of steam.

C'mon people..... Our corners in this last game played right up on the receivers allot this last game. Watch again if you don't believe me.... 10- 12 yards back.... not hardly..

Our offense went hurry up quite a bit in the second half of this last game and it was working pretty well.

There were changes made in the coaching scheme that were significantly different then what we had been seeing.
Shay in at QB for one...

Now what is true....... Those receivers were BIG!! Terribly difficult to defend a threat like that with the young secondary we have... (remember Randy Moss)?
Sucks right now.... But huge benefit in the long run... You know the kids learned something going up against that aerial assault ND put on them...
And for the most part in the second half our boys did quite well..... I feel they just tired out at the end... Our offense pulls off maybe two better/longer drives and our "D" stays a little stronger at the end and we pull off a great come back...
Didn't happen and ya' that sucks..... It's what we got and what we move forward with. Unlike most people on here I think the last game was one of the better coached of the year... :o
Inexperience/youthfullness cost us this game..... Not the coaches... :twocents:
