Hello Griz Nation,
As you may or may not know this is Andrew Schmidt, 04-08. I post every so often and really don't care if people know my identity while posting. As you well know by now our head coach and athletic director were fired today amid the controversy of rape allegations of student athletes. My worry in this matter is that the blame has been placed completely at the feet of O'Day and Pflugrad, and our president has taken none of it himself.

I have gone on the record many times stating my displeasure of having Royce as our president. My personal feelings do not matter much here however. The scandal at UM is on the same plane as the scandal at Penn State. They are not equal, as I feel the Penn State scandal is worse, but they both require the same type of action. They require a clean slate, from the top on down. The decision has been made as to O'Day and Pflugrad, now the University must replace Royce. No person is safe when a scandal this big rips through a university and the school has to start over.

This scandal is not like the one at Ohio State, where players were profiting off their own image, but it happened to be against NCAA rules. There the head coach got fired and Gordon Gee kept his job. This scandal involves rape, one of the worst acts a person can commit. This is beyond NCAA rules, this is a violation of the highest degree. UM has to wipe the slate clean. Royce has to accept responsibility even though his tenure was so short. He may not have been president while every allegation surfaced, but to allow him to escape responsibility of any kind is inexcusable. He needs to step aside or be forced out. This is the only way to start anew at UM so we can move forward at this difficult time. Anything less would be a disservice.

This is just my opinion, you can agree, disagree, rip it apart, go crazy, I really don't mind. However, as a UM Alum I feel it needs to be said.

Go Griz,

Andrew Schmidt

see, you should have stayed home and played for the cats then. i promise you that ONE win would have been much sweeter than the 4 losses.....

I agree. Engstrom needs to hold himself to the same standard as he is holding O'Day and Pflugrad to.

I agree with Andrew and take it a step further. Engstrom has taken the coward's way out. The buck stops with him and he needs to go now.

Engstrom has painted himself into a corner- meaning no exit strategy. The national press is demanding answers he should have been prepared to give and I'm thinkin' maybe just now he's starting to wonder where he finds an AD and a football coach (and a staff?) in the midst of spring practice five months from starting the season. There's a headline waiting here; "UM Rolls Royce"

Thanks, Andrew. You said what my spouse and I had been discussing just prior to reading your post. I think Engstrom definitely took the coward's way out, by having Greg Sundberg be the one who pronounced the firing of O'Day and Pflu. It was like, IMO, that he was washing his hands of the whole situation and pretending that he had nothing to do with it, that it was all athletics and something that didn't touch the president's office. I've been pretty much a supporter of Engstrom, until that....

Yea, I had a hard time with that too. Greg is a good friend of Jim O'Day's and I can imagine that it was very easy to make that announcement. I thought it was cowardly of the one that "didn't renew their contracts". Please.

This is sickening. Feel sorry for the student/players who have to endure this shit. This program-whether we want admit or not-will never be the same. The predatory allegations that have emerged and been denied or excused have put this program at an all time low. Most importantly, the women who have been violated and/or humiliated by all of this should not have had to endured what they've gone through. Mr. Engstrom, you too, should step down.

Engstrom may have underestimated the Griz Nation. In the days to come, he may be analogized with another historical figure who arrive in Montana from the Dakotas seeking status and glory, but who made an ill-advised maneuver at an inopportune time. It would appear that the ego and narcissism are present. Perhaps, in the days to come, he may even be heard to mouth a similar exclamation as George Custer, e.g. "Where did all these f--ing Indians come from."
Go Griz!
