Cats kick Griz Butts in basketball in Bozeman

Griz lost 77 - 61. If there was anything positive about this game is that the Griz started out well with some leads. But the turnovers cost Griz big, and Cat's played well and took control of the game. Also, foul problems hurt the Griz.

Have to say, I kind of stopped watching when the Griz and Cats were tied, I believe the score was 26 - 26 at the time. When I came back, Cats were in control and it looked ugly.

Griz basketball team has the worst overall record in the Big Sky Conference. I see little improvement under the current coaching staff in comparison to the prior coaching staff. The prior coach won the Big Sky Conference tournament in his last year and went to the National tournament. Anybody think the current Griz coach and team can achieve that?

Thanks for your updates TrueGriz (I count on them now).

It looks like UM got no bench scoring and had far too many turnovers (consequently too many easy MSU points). The bobcats have always been tough in Bozeman, but we used to have a better BB program under Heathcote, Brandy, Monty, Stew & Taylor. I really hope we make improvements in mens BB and become stronger.

On a positive note, the Lady Griz rolled over them in Bozo. Was the paper correct that less than 7,000 went to the mens game?

Go Griz!

I'm not real knowlegeable in Basketball but I don't think this team has a realistic chance of getting 10 wins this season. They looked sloppy and lethargic, they don't seem to have the high energy level needed to be a top team.

it seems like the Griz have enough talent that the games should be closer than they are. It seems they just aren't meshing.
Just my opinion.

Not likely this year, but you never know. There is a couple of recruits doing quite well now and have promising futures as Griz. Kennedy is starting to emphasize high school players. Plus, that tournament championship may have made it look like a better future for BB under Holst, but there isn't any proof that the Griz wouldn't be under the same situation if Holst was still coach.

As for Holst, I never liked his system, thought it very boring even when compared to Blaine Taylor's. One thing I didn't like Taylor is that he shuffled his players in and out so fast that there never was a chance for any continuity or flow to his offense.

But, Not to defend Kennedy as he was certainly not my first choice (an assistant from University of Arizona was mine), I was not sorry to see Holst go. Bad timing under the circumstances. That last year, the Griz weren't even at .500 or higher either before the tournament with a weaker schedule. And when reading the Missoulian after it, it seems the players wanted him just to sit down and let them play.

As it is turning out though, Kennedy's system is turning out just as bad or worse. But, the Griz played real well in the holiday tournament durung the thanksgiving holiday. The most exciting basketball I have watched in many years.

But there is something very lacking on the team right now. That is a true point guard (better than Mansell) and a good backup point guard. Plus, the Griz lack a very dominating big man to take the pressure off of Kamar Davis.

As of now, because of the lack of a dominating big man (like Trammel and Matt Williams), every opponent double or triple teams Kamar Davis and then extends everybody else out to take away the passing lanes. Thus, Griz have problems passing the ball and it turns into a one on one offense. Thus there are few if any assists, and more turnovers.

As for the tournament, you have to consider only two teams do not make the tournament. Right now, that can be any team, though Eastern Washington looks to be the early favorite to win the regular season championship and host tournament. As long as a team makes the tournament, it only matters that you play your best basketball during the tournament than anytime else. With the quality of play in Big Sky, I think a team may only have to win 5 or 6 Big Sky Conference wins to get in. Maybe even 4 wins will get a team in. Big Sky Conference is very poor this year.

In addition, you never know what will happen after a coaching change. Hauck is certainly going to be wearing a bullseye again next football season if it turns out like last year and Griz go one and out in playoffs.

I would think UM would cheer EWU on to take league and host the tourny. You guys may have played your best game there on 1/8. and it wasn't cause EWU had a bad game...UM was clicking!

Very good bball analysis True Griz. I totally agree on their lack of another big man inside. Davis was double teamed and key was stacked with Bobcat players over middle all night. It therefore cut off the passing lanes and no quick reversing of the ball. It seemed like almost all medium/long range shots the Griz shot were rushed/tough shots with a guy in there face. The trapping in the 2nd half really caused the Griz problems too. It could be a totally different game in Missoula though as 2-3 Bobcats that usually are role players for Cats really had good games in this one (Faaborg/Brown) etc. They will need the same kind of effort in Missoula to beat the Griz there. It is very nice having Towsley coming in off the bench though. As of right now, I would give the Cats an edge over Griz bench. Dissly/Towsley/Owsley are a good trio coming in right away off the bench.

What do you think egriz? "I've been on the bench a lot at the end of these games," to be on the court and contribute...this is pertty special for me." Faaborg--a senior from Bozeman. I watched a Cat game a week ago, it sure was nice to see Durr and Dizzley be the difference.

I think TrueGriz said it pretty well. However, I think we have as much chance of winning the tournament now as we did in 2002. The Griz have beaten what looks like 2 of the better teams in the league (Eastern WA, ISU). There really doens't appear to be a great team in the conference. If you make the tournament anyone can win. It wouldn't surprise me if the regular season champion has 10 wins, and 4th place has 7. Given that they play 5 of our last 7 at home I think it is a pretty good bet that the Griz are in there somewhere.

We need our bench to score! Cummings, Easley, Venters, Dlouhy etc. had many minutes of playing time but little scoring. Our subs have to be able to come in and score. Seyfert also needs to score more, haven't been overly impressed with him. It hurts us when Mansell is on the bench because of foul trouble and we have a true freshman in there, Lynch has done a good job but doesn't score as much or provide as much leadership as when Mansell is in. Hopefully when Booker can play again he'll add a spark and some energy to the team. Need to cut back on turnovers, but like someone said has to do with not being able to run our offense and trying to force passes into double coverage. Once in a while I see our team playing as a team and with chemistry, but have also seen some of them being selfish at times. Hope they get it together before tournament.

They may have a bad record...but compare our schedule to most other teams in the big sky and you'll see a big difference. Montana and Eastern had the worst non-conference records but they also played much tougher teams than any other team in the big sky.

I don't think saying that there's not much improvement is really accurate because of that and for other reasons. One big improvement is that the players like Kennedy a lot better than they liked Holst. Another improvement is the caliber of players that Kennedy has brought in (like Davis). Plus there's the scheduling. We're playing in games that give us more national recognition. We weren't expected to win a lot of them...and we lost some that we should have but I don't think the coaching staff is completely to blame for that and neither are the players.
