Caputo and Blancas

If this has been posted, I missed it.

Reading my Montanan magazine that I received this week, I see in the obits the passing of Steve Caputo and Arnie Blancas, two prominent names from the Swarthout era. Both of them were halfbacks in Swarthout's wishbone. Blancas '69-'70 and Caputo '69-'71.

They were a treat to watch on the field, weaving and a bobbin. On the other hand maybe it was the wine...

You guys tailgated/watched football while drinking wine? That's hilarious!

Steve lived down the hall on 5th floor Aber Hall his freshman year, and roomed with Robin Peters. That floor was a hoot, and we spent many evenings partying with the 5th floor renegades, and driving our RA insane. Memories, all too fresh, that seem like only yesterday. Caputo was a good dude as well as a great athlete.

He spent a summer in Darby right after graduating and played on my old man's softball team... SOB was a monster.

We used to play touch football out behind Aber Hall where the stadium sits now. I remember how the passes he threw were so hard it hurt your hands to catch them. He was recruited as a QB, which he played in high school, but converted to a RB by Swarthout. He had a cannon for an arm. Great ping pong player too. Just an all-around great athlete.

They both steamrolled defenses. Got us into the Camellia Bowl. Fun to watch.
Sorry to hear the news. Can't remember if either got to play in Camelia Bowl due to JC transfer rules?

Caputo was not a JC transfer. He was recruited out of high school as a QB. I can not remember if he played in the Camilla Bowl, but I think he did. Not sure about Blancas. I know Larry Miller could not play in that bowl game.

Didn't Caputo occasionally post on here, or maybe on the old UMGMB? Seems like I remember reading some stuff from him.

Neither played in the Camelia Bowl, as well as Safety Karl Stein, Fullback Les Kent and several others because JC Transfers were ineligible to play in the game. I remember wondering what sense that made since they played a major role in getting the Griz to the game. It was obviously a big disappointment for everyone.

I did not say they PLAYED in the Camellia Bowl, I posted that they GOT us into the Camellia Bowl. I remember well the JC consternation.

My wife dated Caputo in late 70s, when he worked as bartender for Holding Company. My wife was the hostess at the time. We stayed in touch and I remember him being upset watching Yo take down his record for rushing. He really wanted to keep that record. The last time we saw him was ten+ years ago at the Emma Lommasson Center Dedication. RIP Steve.
