weebs loses by 2 at PSU (ahhh, that's a shame....)

UNC up 11 with 5 to play.

NAU down 12 with 2:30 to play

I just checked the Big Sky scores over on the ESPN website....and looked at the box scores too. I was stunned by the attendance figures. UNC @ Sacramento State -- listed at 429, Weber @ PSU -- listed at 978, the game at EWU listed 1,072 and the Griz at Idaho State, something like 2,100....that's kind of sad. Sacramento has a metro population of over a million....and Portland's must be 500,000 or so.

Proof once again that the larger the city, the less interest there is in mid-major college athletics. St. Louis University played Fordham the other day in the Meadowlands Arena and drew 400 fans.

Wow, I would guess that the Arena has to staff 30 to 40 people just to get the doors open for an event -- security, building maintenance, concession, parking control, etc....and that's probably a conservative estimate; lots of employees standing around not doing a lot. I guess about the only bright spot for the fans is not having to wait in line for a hot dog or to use the bathroom.

Except that Seattle U, which is still a transitional DI program with no conference affiliation, is drawing almost 3900 per game in Key Arena. And they have a popular Top 25 University of Washington a couple miles away to compete with for the college basketball fan.

That's pretty good. University of Portland, by comparison, is averaging just about 2,500 a game. In general, I'd hate to be a mid-major competing for interest in a professional sports town.

PS--And I'd hate to be a mediocre power school trying to compete -- USC, for example, is averaging just over 4,300 fans a game.
