Brian Lynch

Let's face it everyone...Brian Lynch is getting screwed! How can a player, in the period of one week, go from starting and playing the most minutes of anyone on the team to not playing at all. There is something definitely wrong and flat out strange going on. Would someone please give me one good, solid reason why this has happened. I have seen every game this year and Lynch has shown me absolutely no reason to deserve this treatment. The only explanation for this would be something going on behind the scenes. And I have heard of no such stories or incidents that have happened in practice or off the court to warrant this ridiculous change of events. Krysco came into this program and one of the first things he did, before he bought a house, was buy Brian Lynch a college education. I think everyone knows Krysco is not the type of guy to give a scholarship to someone for the hell of it. He saw the impact Lynch made last year and how he smoothly handled the pressure toward the critical, latter part of the season as a true Freshman. The kid is very fundamentally sound, has a great attitude, is a great team player, smart with the ball, and limits turnovers. One would be led to believe the Matt Martin has been cleaning Krysco's house while Lynch has been egging it. Let's get with it Krysco and if you're going to "tinker" with the team, then tinker with it, don't try extreme makeovers.

I'm sure Lynch is a great guy and all but I honestly don't think he's a division 1 point guard. Matt Martin really has outperformed Lynch as a point guard this year so far. He's deadly from 3 point range, is a pretty good defender & the offense runs much better when Martin is at the point.

We got to see a little of Virgil Matthews at the point last game too and he did a good job for the few minutes he was in. I think Virgil will start to get more time at the point once they've had him play point more in practice. Matthews & Martin were both recruited to be point guards & I think that with Matthews & Martin sharing time at point the offense will run pretty smoothly.

I do feel bad for Lynch not getting as many minutes, but its possible Krysko is going to try Lynch at the 2 guard since he is a good 3 point shooter. Its hard to know though... This isn't meant as a slam against Lynch or anything, so please don't take it that way. I just don't think he's the right guy to play point guard for this team. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents... I'd be interested in seeing what other posters & BB fans have to say about it.

If you ask me, I think that Matt Martin is a "Loose Cannon". When the ball is in his hands, I don't know wether to close my eyes or slap myself in the face. He is absolutely turnover prone. For someone to say that he is a better ball handler than Lynch is flat out NOT TRUE. I don't feel he is "deadly" from the 3-point line either. I have seen him so many times bring the ball up the court and launch from 20+ feet when he should have been launching the offense, like Lynch does. Martin is a hustler, but on offense he just seems too over-anxious and tries to do too much. He definitely has a ways to go and needs to get under control. No matter which way you look at it, Lynch needs to be on the floor, whether it be at the 1 or the 2. He is just too big of a "proven" asset to let go to waste.

monthoops, don't take this personal, but you sound like a parent that is mad about their kids not getting enough playing time. I can't see Krysko giving playing time to a kid because of anything other than talent, work ethic, abilities, etc. If he feels Martin is better, then he's the coach and we have to assume he knows best. Otherwise, why wouldn't one of us be in his shoes. Maybe Lynch hasn't been 100% healthy or something. The flu has been going around.

If you have seen every home game this year live as well as every away game that has been televised, and have followed Griz basketball closely throughout the past 4 head coaching changes, then you can answer this question and not just tell me that Krysco is the coach and my last name is Lynch and this, that and every other way around a straight and to the point explanation to my original suggestion that Brian Lynch, in fact, is getting screwed. What actions of in-game play by Brian or therefore, Martin, warranted such a complete and utter turn of events in the Grizzly front court? I want a specific and straight forward opinion. Not some wishy-washy dance around the facts statement that does no justification to the current situation. Because that's all I've gotten so far.

I think Brian is a nice kid and he works his tail off. But I agree with the posters above who believe he has not shown Division 1 point guard ability. He got most of his minutes last year only when Mansell could not play. While playing point this year, Brian has been turnover prone, has not run the offense well and has been easy to trap. He often struggles when trying to defend quick opponents. I have seen all of the home games and feel that Farr, Matthews and Martin are better ball handlers and defenders. They are just plain quicker. Farr has not played the point but certainly has shown point guard type skills with his ball handling and passing. I think Coach K gave Brian a fair shot at the point and said it well when he indicated Brian is more of a 2 guard (just as he was in high school). I'm not sure how many minutes he will get at that position either though with Criswell, Matthews and Farr available. I have no doubt that Coach K is making decisions based solely on what give the GRIZ the best chance to win. I applaud his willingness to change things when things need changing.

I guess I can't respond to this anymore. Let us know when we're good enough to join your little world.

Thank you GrizWhiz for your straight forward opinion. MontanaRaised, I never said I was better than anyone else, I just asked that they be knowledgable on the subject. I have absolutely no problem with differing oppinions. This message board wouldn't exist without them.

My high school coach said it is not good enough to just not make mistakes. A player makes positive and negative plays. The player who has a combined total on the positive side, even with more mistakes, will play over the player who comes up neutral with not as many mistakes. There's your logic monthoops. Martin is making things happen out there, yes he makes his fair share of mistakes, but he's doing a lot of good as well.

He's solid from 3, so his man must play him honest. With Lynch, they cheat on the inside and are willing to give up a shot to him. The same idea works towards Kevin as well. A solid pure shooter makes any offense better. I think Martin is doing for Kevin what Kevin did for David Bell a couple years ago.

Also, John Seyfert is seeing next to no playing time with Andrew Strait filling in most of the time. Just as in Brian's case, I don't think John is getting "screwed". The Griz are trying to figure out what the best team to put on the floor is. This is the case anytime a new coach comes in. Nobody should take it personal, just get out there, keep working and be ready when your number gets called.

I think Brian will see his fair share of time this year, although I believe it will be off the bench. It's unfair to base an opinion on the Santa Clara game because Martin came out and played an extremely solid ball game. It's like Monaco playing all 40 minutes for the Lady Griz Sunday. The job was getting done, who cares who does it.

Martin makes things happen-he is better. He andS trait should start the rest of the season. Coach K needs to win-not be PC.

Good point. I think others have pointed out Martins defencies and those are typical of Freshmen basketball players. At times yes martin looks very good at the point, and at other times no. Martin though has a huge upside. I really think it is a pick your poisen situation.

Of the 3 guys that have played the point, Matthews is probably the best in terms of defense, passing and ball handling. Martin provides the most explosive offensive potential however and is rapidly getting better in the other areas.

I just think that too many people have written Lynch off, and I think that it is way too early to do so. Maybe he hasn't impressed certain people in certain ways like the other two, but I know the talent is there. Last year, people were impressed with Lynch's play after taking over for the injured point in the end of the season. Now this year, in the start of the season, he gets benched, and people say he's not D 1 material. It is easy to say now, but we'll see what happens. Maybe things will change, maybe they won't. But I'm going to stick with my guy until HE proves me wrong.
