Breakout Player 2023

My definition of breakout player is one who isn't talked about or is under the radar and comes out of nowhere to light it up, my nomination is Drew Deck. Been in the program for a few years. Was trusted at the end of last season to fill in for Bergen when he was out and was trusted to return punts as a red shirt freshman.

Damn, that is one good off the radar pick! Nice one.

Folks are saying keelan white…is he really an unknown or potential surprise or break out player? I think he already put himself on the map as a reliable and legit player last season.

I agree. On the defensive/special teams side i think Kellen Detrick will breakout.

One of the common characteristics of the receivers last season, minus Roberts, who was the best route runner on the team, was that they were covered like blankets. Even Fontes had trouble separating with what we know to be blazing speed. I think this was an artifact of the pass offense, which predominantly looked for the receivers running toward the sidelines, then backs, all while sending hate mail to those playing the TE position. To me, Roberts was reliable. Everyone else got short shrift in a poor scheme. I think White is worthy of a breakout season since he didn't make more than two catches per game in the past two. And again, not his fault that they couldn't find him with the ball. Or Bergen for that matter.

That's been a consistent criticism of receivers in our scheme not named Toure, Akem and Roberts for a while now. The hope obviously is that a change in scheme will allow our guys more separation, but I truly hope that it really is a scheme issue, and not an ability to separate issue. We seem to have a QB in Vidlak who can make all the throws from the pocket or on the run, so I'm optimistic that will open some things up for Pease and the receivers.

I got Tyler Flink. I think he will have an O'Connell type year. Maybe not always be starting but, when he's out there, he's gonna be smashing people.

Well that’s what he did LAST year….flying all over the field.

He had 22 receptions and only 9 yards per catch. Didn’t establish himself as anything. Definitely a breakout candidate.

I'm going with the o-line.

This is the first year in a very, very long time we might see some consistent DOLA.

Manufacturing good luck this season is going to begin here. It's time.
