Bracketing Do's and Don'ts

DO: Pay attention to the Las Vegas odds when searching for possible "upsets." No. 12 seed Arizona was a one-point favorite over No. 5 Utah in the first round last year and No. 10 USC was a two-point favorite over No. 7 Boston College. Vegas nailed it both times.

DON'T: Pay attention to which team's mascot would win in a fight. I like a Grizzly Bear in a death match against pretty much anything. But I don't like the Montana Grizzlies against the New Mexico Lobos or the Oakland Grizzlies against the Pittsburgh Panthers.

Someone who thinks the Griz may make some noise.

Montana Grizzlies (14). Cinderella history: Won 2006 game against Nevada as a 12-seed. The Grizzlies have Anthony Johnson, who scored 42 points to lift his team to a win in the Big Sky finals. Johnson has a smooth stroke, and we hope he can continue to have a complete lack of a conscious in the first round against New Mexico. Speaking of the Lobos, we pick Montana as a Cinderella more because of its opponent. While UNM has been so steady for a majority of the season, it's not the best defensive team. The Lobos have feasted on a lot of slow-moving, shot-clock expiring offenses in the Mountain West, and they could get jolted by Montana's shooting ability. The Grizzlies are the 16th-most efficient field-goal shooting team in the country. All of those shots will have to fall for an upset to occur, but with the way Montana's feeling right now, why not?

the first rule of betting is, don't bet your favorite team. but i'm frankly surprised we're not getting more such respect for this game. we're both a good shooting and good defensive team, we've got two seven-footers, a hot player in anthony johnson, and a lot of confidence coming out of the weber game. look down your nose at the big sky at your own perirl: the conference fared better than ever before against outside competition. i think this is a competitive game, wire to wire.
