BPI

I believe it was 4 or 5 years ago when Fullerton told programs to step up the schedule. Today, it is tougher than ever for small conference teams to get the right mix of SOS, home/away games, and stay within the athletic budget. Personally, I want to the GRIZ take on the attitude of Gonzaga from a decade a go, and more recently what Long Beach State did last year.

Play a few big name opponents on the road, a few mid level teams, a few average or below programs, and for the life of GOD, get rid of the div II and lower games at home. Other than exhibition games, mix up the OOC schedule with strictly Div 1 games.

I agree. My question is why is Gonzaga not on the schedule? Regional matchup with a top team and let Montana play a perennial tourney team who recruits in the same areas.

Don't know how the BPI works but it doesn't make any sense that Weber State is almost exactly where they were a week ago before the 2 losses and we just moved up a few points. At least with the RPI we moved up 25 to #125.

Regarding SOS, earlier I had been following http://realtimerpi.com/rpi_conf_Men.html. During OOC, the BSC was actually around the top 10 (#7, I believe) for SOS. Now, of course, after playing the BSC with all their junk losing records, it's SOS is 29th.

In contrast, the women were (and still are) around #18 for SOS and are #15 for RPI now.

I remember thinking that the solution for the men was actually to schedule less challenging/more winnable games. Because nobody had many OOC wins, every game is like a big hit to one's RPI regardless of margin of victory. There's no room for error during conference play. Alternatively, the ladies are beating each other up yet there are still a majority of the teams with winning records overall and thus, high RPIs. They have this unheard amount of winning teams because their OOC games were winnable.

I like how the Griz schedule. Good, winnable mid-majors for the most part with a few lower end sprinkled in to build confidence during the OOC. Now, they just need to find a way to win the San Frans and Colorado States. There's no AP Top 25 team that they would almost never beat. Even BYU isn't that terrible to play. Cap the difficulty at a BYU-type and only have one per year. If everyone else in the BSC stopped playing Kentucky, Kansas or the other big boys, they might be able to get to .500 OOC. They wouldn't have quality wins for tourney seeding but really, the BSC seeding is probably capped at (the extreme most) a 10 seed anyway.

I agree that we should try to schedule the Zags, but this year, it would be ugly. Kelly Olynyk would eat our lunch.

My question is how does Gonzaga do such a fine job of recruiting in foreign countries? When I was watching the Butler game 10 days ago the announcers pointed out that there were 6 members of the Gonzaga Basketball team that were not from the US. That's virtually 50% of the roster. Of those players 3 were starting, including both Oleynic(?) and Pankos(?) who were both from Canada. Gonzaga has players from Latin America, Canada and Central Europe on their roster and all seem to be contributing.

Why aren't we looking at more talented foreign players? I'm not criticizing the recruiting that we have had, but it seems like there is a vast untapped potential that could be explored here.

I know there are budget concerns, but now, particularly since one of TInkle's daughters is playing for Gonzaga, even their castoff's might be worth a phone call or two.
